Upper Iowa football was successful in its Homecoming conquest as they trumped William Jewell 38-31 in a thrilling overtime victory. The Peacocks improved to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the GLVC, while the Cardinals dropped to 3-3 and 1-2 in league play.
UIU had a 24-6 advantage going into the half, but allowed WJC to rally off three consecutive touchdowns and notch a field goal to take a 31-34 lead with just over a minute left in regulation. A 16-yd pass from quarterback
Darryl Overstreet Jr. to
Mante Morrow put the Peacocks behind by one (31-30), and the extra point from
Nathan Behne forced the overtime session.
The Peacocks had possession first in the extra segment and receptions from
Cam Williams and
Eddie Burgess put the home team two yards from the end zone. A short jaunt left from Overstreet into Cardinal territory for a touchdown and extra point put the Peacocks ahead 38-31.
William Jewell's final play of the game was set up at 4th and 10 on the UIU 13-yard line. The blue and white defense stepped up as
Baxter Bohr forced a fumble and the Cardinals recovered the ball, but downed themselves and brought the game came to a conclusion.
The home team was called for 18 penalties that totaled 166 yards, while the visitors suffered 10 penalty calls for 103 yards.
Overstreet completed 24-30 passes and recorded two touchdowns in this afternoon's victory. He set up the team for their first field goal of the contest to lead the Cardinals 3-0 in the opening quarter, rushing for 26 yards up the sideline.
Jayden Mitchell collected two touchdowns and rushed for a team-high 68 yards, while also tallying 51 yards receiving on five receptions.
Mante Morrow recorded 56 yards and one touchdown in the contest.
Defensively,
Michael Mulherin paced the Peacocks with seven tackles.
Baxter Bohr tallied two sacks, and as a unit, the team had seven pass break ups.
UIU is on the road next weekend as they take on Lincoln University in Jefferson, Mo. on Saturday at 12 p.m.
