Peacock volleyball had Quincy on the ropes Friday night after a 2-0 start but they could not hold off the visitors and fell in a five-set battle. UIU rattled off the first two wins at 25-20 and 25-23 before QU prevailed in the last three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-13 and 15-8. The Hawks improved to 14-1 (3-0 GLVC), while the Peacocks shifted to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Zoe Semelroth finished the contest by tying her season-high of 24 kills, followed by
Nicole Pozorski with eight.
Martha Pace collected three aces, while Pozorski and Semelroth each had four blocks. Pozorski dished out a team-high 44 assists and
McKenna Diermeier tallied 14 digs.
Upper Iowa kept Quincy on their toes in set one with solid serving, and they opened the set with a 7-2 lead. The Hawks recorded their lowest hitting percentage of the night at .200, while the Peaocks registered a .278 at the net. A kill from
Lydia Imbrogno gave the home team a 21-15 lead to force a QU timeout. The Hawks fought back and rattled off a handful of points, but an Imbrogno and Semelroth slam at the end of the set sealed the first frame for the Peacocks.
UIU jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the second period, but back-to-back kills later from Quincy gave them a boost for the 10-9 advantage. The two teams continued to trade points back and forth, but two dumps over the net from setter
Nicole Pozorski and a block from
Alexis Moses and
Martha Pace put the Peacocks ahead 19-17. The Hawks went on a 5-1 run after a timeout, but a successful challenge from Upper Iowa on a play at the net gave them momentum to rattle off a 5-1 burst to finish the set.
The Hawks revved into gear for set three as they mustered a 14-9 lead, but three kills from
Zoe Semelroth helped fuel a 5-0 run from the Peacocks, which tied the game up at 14 apiece. The Hawks retaliated with a 6-1 burst and would later finish the set with four unanswered points.
Quincy carried their momentum into set four in their 12-point triumph. They hit .483 at the net and maintained a comfortable lead throughout its entirety.
Grace Fruzen and
Kylie Gustafson provided a lift off the bench as Fruzen dished four assists and Gustafson recorded two kills.
Set five belonged to the Hawks as they came out with dominant play and recorded seven kills while taking advantage of Upper Iowa's seven errors.
The Peacocks will look to bounce back tomorrow against Illinois Springfield at 1 p.m. in Dorman Memorial Gymnasium.
