Peacocks Comeback Effort Falls Short Versus Tritons

Upper Iowa was unable to upset the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons in their final home game of the season, as the Tritons won by a score of 2-1.

The Peacocks offense opened the game with junior Fabio Bender making a perfect cross-field pass to fifth year Daigo Adachi. Adachi fired his shot past the goalie, but it ricocheted off the top of the post just 32 seconds into the match. Missouri-St. Louis saw a better result on their second shot of the game, as Jon Campbell scored in the 11th minute.

With the Peacocks back on the attack, their pass in the box was deflected off the arm of the defense and Upper Iowa was awarded a penalty kick. Fifth year Thomas Walle stepped up to take the kick in the final home game of his career, and his shot found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Following the goal, junior Diogo Cardoso recorded saves in the 27th and 37th minutes, and he finished the half with three saves.

Cardoso continued to thrive in the second half as he made a diving one handed save in the 53rd minute and another jumping one handed deflected in the 67th. He recorded two more saves in the 68th and 69th minutes, and he recorded his season-high, ninth save of the game in the 77th. In the 81st minute, freshman Dailan Bangu dumped off a pass from the middle of the field to freshman Timur Nagy. Nagy fired a strike on target, but it was deflected away on a diving save.

Following an injury to Cardoso, junior JJ Gonzalez-Hayes subbed in at goalie and he recorded a save in the 81st minute. Junior Alejandro Sanchez intercepted a pass a few minutes later and he recorded a shot on goal which was caught by Austin Reis. The Tritons offense attempted a shot in the 86th minute, which deflected off the post. UMSL recovered the deflection and Campbell scored his second goal on an assist from Gibson Hunt, to seal the 2-1 win.

Prior to the match, the Peacocks honored their ten seniors in Thomas Walle, Daniel Pranger, Kehinde Afolabi, Fabio Bender, Daigo Adachi, Nozomu Kamei, Ethan Bird, Preston Price, Millo Mamud, and Alejandro Perez as they played their final game at Harms-Eischeid Stadium.

The Peacocks will look to end the regular season on a high note as they take on Illinois Springfield on Friday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. and McKendree on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2:30 p.m. with both games being held on the road.
