Hawks Swoop in and Seal Victory in Fayette

Upper Iowa volleyball welcomed Rockhurst to Fayette on Friday evening and fell in a 3-0 decision to the Hawks. RU defeated UIU by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-16. Rockhurst improved to 14-5 overall and 5-2 in the league, while Upper Iowa shifted to 9-11 on the year and 1-4 in the conference.

Zoe Semelroth led the team with 11 kills and 5 blocks, and Marissa Becker trailed right behind with ten kills. Nicole Pozorski tallied 27 assists and McKenna Diermeier collected 14 digs.

Set one was a back-and-forth match until the tail end. The game was tied at 21 apiece until the Hawks exerted a burst of dominant offense and went on a 4-1 run to conclude the set. RU recorded four kills while giving the Peacocks one point on a service error.

Semelroth recorded the team's first four points in set two with four kills, aiding the team to an early 6-2 lead. The Hawks saw a 5-1 lead mid-set to give them a 13-9 advantage and claim a lead they did not relinquish. Grace Fruzen gave a lift from the bench with several assists and digs, helping the Peacocks stay within striking distance. The Hawks were up 18-17 but rattled off another 4-1 burst to go up 22-18. The two teams went point-for-point, and the guests kept the home team at bay and reached the threshold first.

UIU started set three ahead 5-1, but slowly let RU overtake momentum and gain control of the set. The Hawks rolled off a 9-1 burst that gave them a 15-9 lead that they continued to build upon. The Peacocks committed 11 errors in set three and 22 for the game, nine of them service errors.

Upper Iowa hit .138 as a unit and Rockhurst mustered a .235.

Volleyball is back home tomorrow against William Jewell at 5 p.m. for Alumni Day.
