Upper Iowa was unable to overcome the Maryville Saints, as the Saints were able to sneak away with a 1-0 win.
Senior
Fabio Bender nearly opened the game with the goal of the season, as he attempted a bicycle kick that was on target, but was tipped away by keeper Steen Nielsen. Junior
JJ Gonzalez-Hayes recorded his first save in the 22
nd minute and he recorded back-to-back saves five minutes later. Following a steal by the Saints, Yayo Mutombo fired a shot on goal that was deflected away by Gonzalez-Hayes. Magnus Buschmeier recovered the deflection, fired at an open shot on goal, but his shot has stopped right at the goal line by junior
Florian Deick. Gonzalez-Hayes would later add his fifth save of the half in the 32
nd minute, and the game would remain tied at 0-0 to end the half.
Senior
Nozomu Kamei nearly scored the opening goal of the second half as he dribbled past his defender, fired a shot that sailed past the outstretched arms of the Saints goalie, and ricocheted off the post. Maryville then jumped into the lead in the 58
th minute on a goal that sailed into the right corner of the net from Sebastian Weitlaner. Gonzalez-Hayes recorded two more saves in the 59
th and 68
th minutes, finishing with a total of seven on the day. Neither team would add a shot on target in the final 20 minutes of action, sealing the 1-0 win for Maryville.
