Saints Shutdown the Peacocks in Fayette

Upper Iowa was unable to overcome the Maryville Saints, as the Saints were able to sneak away with a 1-0 win.

Senior Fabio Bender nearly opened the game with the goal of the season, as he attempted a bicycle kick that was on target, but was tipped away by keeper Steen Nielsen. Junior JJ Gonzalez-Hayes recorded his first save in the 22nd minute and he recorded back-to-back saves five minutes later. Following a steal by the Saints, Yayo Mutombo fired a shot on goal that was deflected away by Gonzalez-Hayes. Magnus Buschmeier recovered the deflection, fired at an open shot on goal, but his shot has stopped right at the goal line by junior Florian Deick. Gonzalez-Hayes would later add his fifth save of the half in the 32nd minute, and the game would remain tied at 0-0 to end the half.

Senior Nozomu Kamei nearly scored the opening goal of the second half as he dribbled past his defender, fired a shot that sailed past the outstretched arms of the Saints goalie, and ricocheted off the post. Maryville then jumped into the lead in the 58th minute on a goal that sailed into the right corner of the net from Sebastian Weitlaner. Gonzalez-Hayes recorded two more saves in the 59th and 68th minutes, finishing with a total of seven on the day. Neither team would add a shot on target in the final 20 minutes of action, sealing the 1-0 win for Maryville.

Upper Iowa will celebrate Senior Day against Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 2:30 p.m. Prior to the match, the Peacocks will honor their ten seniors in Millo Mamud, Daniel Pranger, Kehinde Afolabi, Nozomu Kamei, Ethan Bird, Preston Price, Fabio Bender, Daigo Adachi, Alejandro Perez, and Thomas Walle.
