Hidde Scores Late Game Header in Shutout Victory

Upper Iowa propelled themselves back to the #7-seed in the conference as they achieved a 1-0 victory against the Southwest Baptist Bearcats.

Junior Isabelle Wagner recorded a diving safe in the ninth minute of action, denying the shot on goal by Tamerra Grant. Freshman Mikalyn Hidde added her first shot of the game from the far-right corner of the box, which was deflected away by Cece Alexander. Both teams continued to trade shots on target with Wagner adding saves in the 20th and 24th minutes, while SBU recorded saves in the 21st and 31st minutes on shots by freshman Samantha Most and sophomore Maile Kehano.

With both teams tied 0-0 at halftime, Hidde opened the second period with a shot that just sailed wide right. Sophomore Meghan Zwicker recorded a shot on target in the 71st minute and Most added another strike down the middle which was also saved in the 76th. UIU continued to maintain the majority of the possession in the second half, and they had a great opportunity to score in the 82nd.

Sophomore Haylie Hutchinson was able to dribble past her defender where she dumped off a pass to freshman Jordan Goldstein on the right side of the box. Goldstein crossed her lob pass towards the net which connected with Hidde, who headed her shot into the goal. The shot gave Hidde her second goal of the season, as she also scored in the season opener against Winona State. Goldstein recorded her fifth assist on the play which leads the team while Hutchinson recorded her third assist on the year.

The Southwest Baptist attack tried to tie the game two minutes later, but they were denied by Wagner once again. Hidde was also able to add her third shot on goal in the 87th minute, which was saved, and Wagner recorded her fifth save of the game less than a minute later, which was deflected into the Bearcats offense just a few feet from the goal. As SBU lined up to take the shot, senior Amy Gonzalez stole the ball and kicked it away, securing the 1-0 victory for the Peacocks.

Upper Iowa will look to extend their winning streak in Missouri as they face Lincoln on Friday, Oct. 18 at 5 p.m. and Missouri S&T on Sunday, Oct. 20 at noon.
