The Peacocks have won nine out of their last ten games as they defeated William Jewell 85-73 in Liberty, Mo on Thursday night. Upper Iowa improved to 12-5 (7-2 GLVC) while the Cardinals dropped to 11-7 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
Senior guard
Jake Hilmer broke the all-time scoring record after putting up 31 points in tonight's contest, bringing him to 2,198 in his career. He topped Jim Bushkofsky (1970-74), who set the previous record at 2,194 points after his Peacock tenure.
Nick Reid aided Hilmer's scoring as he contributed 18 points, followed by
Noah King with 12 and
Caleb Delzell with 10.
Upper Iowa gained steady control during the first half behind a 50% shooting performance beyond the arc (6-12). They held their largest lead of 11 points with 3:27 remaining, but allowed the home team to rally off nine straight points to end the opening period. The Peacocks held a 39-37 advantage going into the locker room at halftime.
The Cardinals were resilient in the opening minutes of the second stint as they were able to pull within one point of the Peacocks. Hilmer strung together his own 6-0 run with a pair of jumpers and two free throws to give UIU some breathing room with a 52-45 advantage.
The visitors went on another 6-0 slide several minutes later, this chunk of scoring coming from
Caleb Delzell and Hilmer to gain a 57-49 edge.
UIU extended a lead out to 20 points (77-57) with 6:12 remaining in the game. The Cardinals hit four three pointers after that point and went on a 7-2 run to finish the game to close the gap to 85-73.
The starting five did their job on the glass as they each hauled in six rebounds except for
Kyle Hrncir, who paced the team with seven, including four offensive boards.
Hilmer dished out three assists and nabbed four steals, while Delzell grabbed two steals and rejected two shots.
Upper Iowa concluded the game shooting 49.2% from the field (32-65) and 44.4% from three (8-18). William Jewell netted 49.1% from the floor and 31.8% beyond the arc.
The Peacocks head to Kansas City for Saturday's matchup as they take on Rockhurst at 2 p.m.
