Upper Iowa men's basketball trumped Southwest Baptist at home by a score of 90-76 to improve to 11-5 on the season and 6-2 in the GLVC. The Peacocks have won eight out of their nine last games, while maintaining an undefeated record at home (6-0).
UIU never trailed from the opening tip until the final buzzer sounded. They were paced in scoring by
Nick Reid with 22 points, followed by
Jake Hilmer and
Caleb Delzell with 16 and 14, respectively.
The game changer was Upper Iowa's ability to knock down shots from long range. They netted 13-25 (54.2%) from three-point land, and went 10-16 (62.5%) in the first half to help extend their lead. Reid went 5-5 from beyond the arc, while Delzell and
Christian Haffner each chipped in three from long distance.
The Peacocks were hot from the jump as they got off to a 10-0 start with scoring from the trio of Hilmer, Reid and Delzell.
Upper Iowa held a 33-16 lead with ten minutes left in the first period when they strung together a 14-2 run to extend their lead out to 44-18. The home team was ahead 53-30 at the halftime break.
The Bearcats outscored the Peacocks 46-37 in the second half, but they could not catch up to the offensive performance UIU displayed in the first half. SBU went 17-36 from the field in the second stint while the Peacocks hit 12-24.
King and Hilmer feverishly distributed the ball to their shooters as the guard duo had a combined 13 of the team's 20 assists.
Ethan Steinbronn came off the bench for Upper Iowa and hauled in a team-high eight rebounds in tonight's contest.
The Peacocks shot 52.5% (31-59) from the floor, while the Bearcats knocked down 46% from the floor on 29-63 shooting and 4-19 beyond the arc.
Both teams shot over 70% from the charity stripe as UIU went 15-19 (78%) and the Bearcats were 14-20 (70%).
Upper Iowa heads to the state of Missouri next weekend for a pair of matchups with William Jewell on Thursday, Jan. 25 and Rockhurst on Saturday, Jan. 27.
