Peacocks Escape Hawks Nest With a Win

Upper Iowa men's basketball closed out their weekend with an 88-84 victory over Quincy to bring their record to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The Peacocks held a 16-point lead with eight minutes to play, but allowed the Hawks to come creeping back to make it a one possession game with 20 seconds left. UIU did just enough to escape the Hawks nest and come out on top.

Noah King surpassed 1,000 career points in his collegiate career in tonight's contest.

Jake Hilmer netted a team-high of 27 points, despite being scoreless for the first seven minutes. King added 17 points, while Caleb Delzell and Kyle Hrncir both chipped in 13.

The Peacocks started the game down 5-0, but prevented the home team from doing any further damage and stopped their run. Both squads went back and forth on the scoreboard until UIU recorded a six-point burst with two jumpers from Hilmer and a finish at the rim from Ethan Steinbronn to go up 30-25 with 7:30 remaining.

Upper Iowa's largest lead of the first half was seven (36-29), after two drive and dish plays from Hilmer to Steinbronn and William Kiburis at the basket.

UIU held a 49-42 lead at halftime. They shot 46.5% from the floor and 31.3% from long distance in the first period, while Quincy shot 50% from the field and beyond the arc.

After the Hawks netted the first basket of the second half, the Peacocks responded by firing off seven straight points with layups from Nick Reid and Kyle Hrncir, along with a jumper from Hilmer.

Another 9-0 slide from Upper Iowa came halfway through the second stint and put them ahead 71-54, their largest lead of the game. The Hawks strung together several scoring bursts of their own, chipping away at the deficit and only trailed by five with 1:16 remaining.

Hilmer converted two free throws at the one-minute mark, but QU bounced right back with a three-pointer to trail 86-82. In a bonus situation, Austin Hilmer was sent to the charity stripe and went 1-2 to lead 87-82.

The Hawks' leading scorer, Zion Richardson, got fouled and sank two free throws to make it a one possession game with 20 seconds left.

King went to the free throw line in a double bonus situation with an opportunity to seal the game. He went 1-2 at the charity stripe and put the Peacocks up by four with six seconds remaining, giving them their ninth win of the season.

Hrncir led the team in rebounds with nine, followed by Delzell with seven.

Upper Iowa hosts two games in Fayette next weekend as they welcome Drury on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Southwest Baptist on Saturday at 3 p.m.
