Upper Iowa football opened conference play on the road tonight versus William Jewell and fell in a 31-13 final. The Cardinals scored 20 points in the second quarter to give them a 23-7 advantage going into halftime. The loss dropped the Peacocks to 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in conference, while WJC improved to 2-2 (1-0 GLVC).
William Jewell opened the scoring in the first quarter after kicking a field goal. They added to their total with a touchdown in the second period on an eight-yard run from Keaundre McCullough.
Upper Iowa responded with their first touchdown of the evening on a short run into Cardinal territory by
Jayden Mitchell to cut the deficit to 10-7. WJC scored their second touchdown of the quarter with 34 seconds to go before halftime.
Both teams remained scoreless in the third quarter. The Peacocks scored their second touchdown of the evening in the fourth quarter on a pass from
Darryl Overstreet Jr. to Monte Morrow into William Jewelll's endzone. With the score at 23-13 in favor of the Cardinals, they capped off their advantage with one final touchdown to extend their lead to 31-13 to end the game.
Overstreet Jr. and Orr split time at quarterback this evening as they combined for 27 completions for 267 yards. The Cardinals completed 15 passes for 229 yards.
Jayden Mitchell led Upper Iowa in the ground game with a total of 52 yards and one touchdown.
Cam Williams and Monte Morrow passed the teams with six receptions for a combined 130 yards.
The Peacocks are on the road again next weekend as they travel to Missouri S&T for their second matchup with the Miners this season. Kick off is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Rolla, Mo.
