Upper Iowa wrapped up their first GLVC homestand of the season with a 4-0 loss to the Quincy Hawks.
The Peacocks played a season-high 25 different players in the match, with freshman defender
Taylor Young making the first start of her collegiate career appearing in all 90 minutes. All three goalkeepers would appear in the match, highlighted by sophomore
Jamie Kerkvliet making her first start of the season.
Kerkvliet played the first 45 minutes of the game, recording two saves. Her lone goal allowed came in the 29
th minute as junior forward Lisa Albarran scored the opening goal of the game for the Hawks. Prior to the goal, UIU had three great opportunities to take the lead but they were denied by great goalkeeping and a phenomenal defense. Sophomore midfielder
Darci Faichnie's shot on goal was saved in the 13
th minute as was junior defender
Katrina Kazluski's attempt in the 20
th minute. The Peacocks' great ball movement in the 21
st minute gave Faichnie an opportunity to score from inside the box but they were denied by a slide tackle from Quincy's defense.
Sophomore
Isabelle Wagner would start the second half in goal for the Peacocks, making an immediate impact. She recorded back-to-back diving saves in the 50
th minute and followed that up with her third save of the game in the 51
st minute. After a quick break, sophomore Alayna Vela returned to the game for Quincy in the 59
th minute, scoring 30 seconds later. The Hawks would follow this up with another goal four minutes later by junior defender Paige Nguyen. Junior midfielder
Chloe Jarosz nearly scored off a free kick for the Peacocks in the 61
st minute, but was denied by a diving save. Wagner would go on to make three more saves in the match, including a one handed jump save in the 69
th minute. Sophomore forward Ella Wolfard scored Quincy's fourth goal of the game on a shot that was fingertips away from being saved by Wagner. Junior goalkeeper
Trinity Engelhardt appeared in her first game of the season as she was in net for the final 17 minutes of the game. She recorded one save and didn't allow any goals.
Upper Iowa will travel to Missouri for their two upcoming games as they go up against Drury and Southwest Baptist. The Peacocks face Drury at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sep. 29 and Southwest Baptist at 12 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1.
