Peacocks Fight Hard in Loss to Ranked Illinois-Springfield

The Peacocks battled out a tough match against the ranked Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars ending their undefeated streak at home with a 0-4 loss.

Upper Iowa made some changes to their starting lineup as veterans, junior forward Kehinde Afolabi and junior defender Daniel Pranger made their first starts of the season. Both players played very well with Afolabi playing 73 minutes and Pranger appearing in all 90 minutes while recording two shots.

After a very quiet twenty minutes to start the game, a foul on Upper Iowa gave the Prairie Stars a free kick from right outside the box in the 23rd minute. Graduate forward Max Tweedle lobbed the penalty kick in front of the Peacocks net and graduate defender Adrian Adames headed it into the goal. Illinois-Springfield nearly capitalized their lead in the 26th and 30th minute but sophomore goalkeeper J.J. Gonzalez-Hayes saved both shots, one with both hands and one with his foot. Graduate defender Noah Brill scored in the 34th minute off an assist from graduate forward Federico D'Andrea, putting the Prairie Stars up 2-0. Gonzalez-Hayes made a phenomenal diving save in the 41st minute, but his deflection landed right at the feet of graduate forward Sergio Crescenzi, and he took advantage of the open net scoring the third goal of the game.

Sophomore midfielder David Mateo Porras Rodriguez had the first two shots on goal in the second half which both came in the 74th minute. He was unable to capitalize for the Peacocks on either look as both attempts were saved. Graduate forward Sergio Crescenzi scored the fourth and final goal in the game for Illinois-Springfield on an assist from D'Andrea in the 83rd minute.

The Peacocks now have a record of 3-2-1 and are coming off back-to-back losses. They will be seeking redemption in their next home match this Sunday Sep. 24 at 2:30 p.m. against Quincy University.
