Peacocks Open GLVC Play with Loss to Truman State

The Truman State Bulldogs have handed Upper Iowa their first loss of the season as UIU suffers a 0-4 defeat to start the conference season.

While senior goalkeeper Archie Watts is still out with an injury, sophomore defender Dexter Garrett returned to the starting lineup playing 88 minutes after missing the last game. Truman State struck first in the sixth minute with a shot right down the middle that was saved by sophomore goalkeeper JJ Gonzalez-Hayes. They would be a lot luckier on their second attempt as senior forward Luke Payne scored in the 13th minute on an assist by senior midfielder Sam Newton. Graduate forward Thomas Walle and sophomore midfielder David Mateo Porras Rodriguez nearly tied the game in the 18th and 22nd minute but junior goalkeeper Justin Olwig made back-to-back saves.

Gonzalez-Hayes would make two more saves in the first half but freshman forward Corbin denied him from picking up a third as he scored in the 33rd minute. Fellow freshman forward Landon Keisker picked up his first of two assists on the play. He'd assist on his second goal in the 49th minute with senior midfielder Jack Knust scoring to put the Bulldogs up 3-0.

Chaos would later occur in the 62nd minute as three players were ejected and will miss their next game. Freshman Miles Elliot of the Bulldogs, and sophomore midfielder Wilmer Canales and Walle were all given a red card. This would result in the Peacocks playing with one less man and it definitely did not boost their odds at making a comeback. After assisting earlier in the game, Newton scored in the 69th minute on an assist by freshman Caden Hoehns. This would be the final goal of the game, giving Truman State a 4-0 victory.

Upper Iowa currently sits at 3-1-1 on the season and will look to bounce back in their back-to-back home games next weekend. The Peacocks play Illinois-Springfield on Friday, Sep. 22 at 7:30 p.m. and will follow that up with a matchup against Quincy on Sunday, Sep. 24 at 2:30 p.m.
