The Peacocks competed against two opponents in the Missouri S&T Classic today, held in Rolla, Mo. They endured two losses on day one, getting swept 3-0 by both Oklahoma Baptist and Missouri S&T. Upper Iowa fell to 4-5 on the season while OBU improved to 6-5 and S&T boosted to 6-3.
In the first game versus the Bison, the scores were similar across all three matches. The final numbers were 25-19, 25-18 and 25-19. The Peacocks held a 8-2 lead to start the set, but endured a 12-1 slide from OBU that put them at a 16-10 disadvantage. They were unable to muster enough points to keep within reach of their opponents.
Upper Iowa continued to struggle to combat the Bisons' runs in the second and third matches. They were down by one point near the end of set three (19-18), but allowed OBU to finish off the contest with a 6-1 run.
Emily Kono registered ten kills and
Zoe Semelroth had nine. Nicole Pizorski handed out 29 assists, while
Kaci Beesecker and
McKenna Diermeier tallied nine digs each.
The sets were more competitive against the Miners, but the Peacocks were unable to convert points when necessary. Despite the 3-0 loss (25-21, 26-24, 30-28), Upper Iowa edged out their opponents statistically in kills (50-47), aces (10-2), assists (40-37) and digs (40-34).
The Peacocks chipped away in the second and third set past the 25-point threshold, but were unable to take down the home team.
Kono led in kills again with 16, while Semelroth recorded 11 and
Alexis Moses had nine. Pizorski dished out 35 assists,
Lydia Imbrogno tallied four aces and
Madelyn Rettler had nine digs.
UIU has one more contest tomorrow in Missouri to round out the tournament. They face Northwestern Oklahoma State University at 10 a.m.
