Upper Iowa softball hosted Wayne State College and dropped 15-9 here at the Eischeid Softball Complex. A double header was originally scheduled for today, but the second contest of the was canceled due to freezing, declining temperatures. The loss dropped the Peacocks to 10-15 on the season and 2-5 in the conference, while the Wildcats improved to 7-23 overall and 2-5 in the NSIC.
Wayne State set the high-scoring tone right away in their first at-bat after they had an initial three-run inning after recording five hits, two of them being home runs. Upper Iowa cracked back with a large offensive inning of their own after scoring five runs. Their early success at the plate stemmed from hits by
Ari Charles, Sam Jessie,
Serah Shafer,
Kylie Doty,
Hannah Bridgewater and
Reagan Church.Â
The Wildcats responded with an additional five runs in the second inning on five hits, taking an 8-5 lead. In the bottom of the second, the Peacocks countered with two runs, fueled by a double from
Rae VanMilligan.
In the third inning, WSC tallied six runs after being walked four times and executing three hits, one of them being a home run. UIU scored two runs in the third on three singles from Bridgewater, Charles and
Taylor Sedam, cutting their deficit to 14-9.
Each team hit a drought as no one was brought all the way around the bases until the Wildcats scored the last run of the game in the seventh inning, to seal their victory in a 15-9 decision.
The Peacocks tallied ten hits on the day while the Wildcats registered 17. Charles, VanMilligan and Bridgewater each recorded two hits to lead the team. VanMilligan also added three RBI's on the day.

Abby Buckman started things off in the circle for Upper Iowa as she lasted two innings, allowing ten hits and eight runs.
Rylee McGonigle and
Delaney Vetter each entered the game from the bullpen, throwing four and two-third innings and one-third of an inning, respectively.
Up next, the Peacocks welcome Minnesota Crookston on Friday for two games at 2 p.m. 4 p.m. Bemidji State comes to Fayette on Saturday for a pair of contests at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. before the team travels to Minnesota State for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 11 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
