Upper Iowa welcomed the University of Minnesota Crookston for a double header at the Harms-Eischeid Complex and came out with two wins, defeating their opponent 6-5 and 8-2. With today's victories, UIU earned their first conference sweep of the season. The Peacocks improved to 12-15 overall and 4-5 in the conference while the Golden Eagles fell to 13-18 on the season and 1-5 in the NSIC.
The first game was executed in exciting fashion as UIU went into the seventh inning with the 4-2 lead, but allowed UMC to score three runs on a home run, allowing them to take the 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the inning. In a do-or-die situation, the Peacocks were forced to execute their offense as
Laila Pelds stepped up to the plate with two outs. She knocked a base hit up the middle, bringing
Taylor Sedam up to bat. Sedam rose to the occasion as she smacked a walk-off homerun over the left field fence, bringing in two runs and sealing the 6-5 victory.Â
Both teams were scoreless until the third inning of the contest. Minnesota Crookston was first on the scoreboard after putting a runner on base and then hitting a triple, giving them their first run. Their second run was brought home on a fielder's choice later in that inning, giving them the 2-0 lead.Â
The Peacocks did not score until the fifth inning.
Kylie Doty started things off by hitting a single, which was the team's first recorded hit since the second inning.
Hannah Bridgewater doubled as her ball ricocheted off the fence to put runners in scoring position on second and third with one out. Shafer hit a shallow ball to left field, scoring one.
Upper Iowa had a big sixth inning, as they recorded four hits and three runs. A hit from Pelds and Sedam started things off. A sacrifice bunt from
Rae VanMilligan moved runners in scoring position. A line drive to third base from
Kylie Doty brought one runner home.
Alli Schaffer was brought in to pinch hit and blasted one to right center, bringing in two runners for the 4-2 lead.Â
The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the seventh for the 5-4 lead, but were defeated by the walk-off home run from Sedam with two outs, sending Upper Iowa to a 6-5 victory.
Rylee McGonigle registered a career-high nine strikeouts in her seven innings of work. She allowed five hits and five runs, three of them earned.Â
In game two, the Peacocks had a monstrous fourth inning, ultimately pushing them to their 8-2 victory.
Minnesota Crookston got to work right away, scoring their only two runs of the contest in the first inning.Â
The Peacocks were scoreless until the fourth inning, but found their offensive stride and never looked back. They executed six runs on five hits, taking the 6-2 lead. Their spurt was fueled by hits from Sedam, VanMilligan, Pelds, Doty,
Ari Charles and
Serah Shafer.
Upper Iowa went on to score one last run in the sixth inning as Pelds singled through the right side of the field, sending Charles across home plate to seal their 8-2 victory.
Upper Iowa registered 11 hits in the contest. They were led by Charles, Sedam, Pelds and Doty who each tallied two hits.
Abby Buckman (5-4) picked up the win for the Peacocks as she came to the mound in the first inning out of the bullpen. She struck out six batters, allowed four hits and did not surrender one run.Â
Up next, the Peacocks are back on their home field tomorrow as they host Bemidji state for another pair of games at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
