Upper Iowa softball continued their weekend in the Dakotas in a doubleheader with the University of Mary. They earned a split on the day, winning the first game 5-4 (8 Inn.) and dropping the second, 12-6. The Peacocks are now 15-22 overall with a 7-12 conference mark, while the Marauders are 6-33 on the season and earned their first conference win of the year (1-19 NSIC).
UIU registered five hits in game one while their opponent tallied nine.
Kylie Doty led the team with two hits while
Serah Shafer,
Ari Charles and
Rae VanMilligan each contributed one. The Peacocks continued their trend of having a massive inning with the amount of runs being brought in as they recorded four of their five runs in the fourth inning alone.Â
The Marauders scored three of their four runs in the second inning fueled behind a single and two home runs. They added another run in the third inning to take the 4-0 lead. However, as their scoring came to a stop, Upper Iowa's was just beginning.
The Peacocks tallied four runs on two outs in the fourth inning. This spurt was fueled behind initial hits from VanMilligan and Doty, walks from
Hannah Bridgewater and
Reagan Church and another two hits from Charles and Shafer. The contest was tied up at four apiece going into the fifth inning.
By the time the seventh inning rolled around, neither team had scored any additional runs, so the game was sent into extra innings. The Peacocks struck again in the top of the eighth. VanMilligan started things off by reaching first base on error. Doty then advanced her to second base on a sacrifice bunt. The final turning point for Upper Iowa happened when
Alli Schaffer came up to the plate and knocked in VanMilligan with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Peacocks kept the Marauders off the board in the bottom of the eighth and sealed their 5-4 victory.
Delaney Vetter (6-7) picked up the win on the mound for Upper Iowa. She tossed 3.2 innings, allowing three hits and zero runs.Â
In game two, the Peacocks gathered five runs within the first two innings and another in the fifth, but they slowly trailed off and were surpassed by the Marauders who rallied late in the game. Upper Iowa raked in 16 hits in the second contest, while their opponents tallied 13. VanMilligan led UIU with three hits.
The Peacocks started off hot in the first inning with a homerun shot from
Laila Pelds which scored two. They brought around another three in the second inning as they registered two doubles from
Hannah Bridgewater and Sam Jessie, along with a single from VanMilligan. UIU held a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the second. The Marauders brought in one run in the bottom of the second and another three in the third inning, courtesy of a homerun.
UMary raked in yet another run in the fourth inning, tying up the game at five apiece. Upper Iowa mustered enough offense to take a 6-5 lead in the fifth inning, but UMary took off in the bottom of the fifth. They scored five runs for the 10-6 advantage. The Peacocks were unable to bring around any more runs, while the Marauders scored an additional two in the sixth inning, resulting in a 12-6 decision in their favor.
Abby Breuer was granted the loss in the circle as she surrendered seven runs on six hits in three innings of work.Â
The Peacocks see one more competitor to round out the weekend as they stay in North Dakota to take on Minot State in a doubleheader at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
