Upper Iowa softball wrapped up their weekend in the Dakotas with a doubleheader in the Air Bubble against Minot State. The Peacocks suffered a heartbreaker in the second game after a walk-off in the ninth inning by the Beavers, resulting in their 4-3 defeat. They fell in the first game by a score of 5-1. The losses dropped UIU to 7-14 in the NSIC and 15-24 on the season, while MSU improved to 13-9 in the conference and 26-18 on the year.
The Peacocks were unable to get on the scoreboard until the seventh inning of game one, while the Beavers scored their first run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly. They brought home two runs in the fourth inning and an additional two in the fifth. Minot had the 5-0 lead going into the seventh inning as Upper Iowa tried to muster up an offensive rhythm. With two outs on the board,
Sadie Carpenter hit a single to center field to get on base in the top of the final inning. Sam Jessie hit the ground ball up the middle that scored Carpenter for UIU's first run of the game. However, the Peacocks were unable to bring anyone else around and fell in the 5-1 decision.Â
Jessie and Pelds led the team with two hits apiece in game one. Jessie registered the only RBI.
Rylee McGonigle threw six innings in the circle for Upper Iowa, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits. She walked four batters and struck out two.
Game two came down to the very last play of the game. The Peacocks scored two runs in the very first inning and not again until the ninth. They loaded the bases after the first three batters (Charles, Jessie and Pelds) each cracked a single. A sacrifice fly by
Rae VanMilligan scored their first of the game and their second run was brought in after a line-drive single from
Kylie Doty, giving UIU the 2-0 lead.
Minot scored one run in the fourth and one in the fifth inning to tie up the game at 2 runs apiece. Neither team scored by the time the seventh inning came around, so the game was sent into extra innings. Finally in the ninth inning, the Peacocks were able to bring in a run after VanMilligan singled to left field and drove Jessie home.Â
With the 3-2 lead, Upper Iowa went into the bottom of the ninth in search of three outs to seal the game. The Beavers had a runner placed on base after being hit by a pitch. There were two outs on the board and a runner on first when MSU's Taylor Smith came to the plate and ripped a homerun over the left field fence, earning the 4-3 walk-off win.
Jessie and
Hannah Bridgewater each tallied three hits to lead the Peacocks in game two. The team registered 14 hits as a whole.Â
Delaney Vetter (6-9) picked up the loss on the mound for UIU. She allowed four runs on six hits in her 8.2 innings pitched. Vetter sat down eight batters in her time in the circle.
The Peacocks return to home field this week as they host Concordia, St. Paul on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. They continue at the Eischeid Softball Complex over the weekend as they take on Northern State on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and MSU Moorhead on Sunday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
