Peacocks Split Games at Sleepy Hollow Complex

Upper Iowa softball competed in two additional games on Thursday at the Sleepy Hollow Complex in Leesburg, Fla. They defeated The College of Saint Rose 3-0 and fell to Grand Valley State University 5-3.

The Peacocks go into their last day of play tomorrow with an overall 5-7 record and a 4-4 mark in The Spring Games. UIU takes on Southern Connecticut State University at 2 p.m. and American International College at 4:30 p.m.

Upper Iowa vs College of Saint Rose

Upper Iowa did not record their first hit until the top of the third inning when Ari Charles smacked a line drive to left field. She stole second base and put herself in scoring position, but was unable to advance before the inning came to a close.

All of UIU's runs were scored in the sixth inning. Samantha Jessie started things off with a line drive to center field, earning a single. Laila Pelds reached first base on an error from Saint Rose's second baseman and Jessie moved to second. Rae VanMilligan stepped up to the plate and executed a sacrifice fly to advance Upper Iowa's runners to second and third. With Reagan Church up to bat next, the pitcher threw a wild pitch and Jessie scored on a past ball. Church hit a flyball and another runner crossed the plate, giving UIU the 2-0 lead. Their last run of the inning was scored on another past ball. The Peacocks held their 3-0 advantage for the rest of the contest.

The Peacocks had a total of five hits in the contest. Kylie Doty went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Upper Iowa in hits. Ari Charles, Reagan Church and Samantha Jessie each recorded one hit.

Delaney Vetter and Abby Buckman combined their efforts on the mound to execute a shutout. Vetter pitched just over four innings, allowing one hit and striking out three batters. Buckman came in to relieve her and close out the game, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Upper Iowa vs Grand Valley State University

Grand Valley State got on the board in the first inning, scoring two runs right off the bat. They scored on one error by the Peacocks and a double hit to left field.

Upper Iowa responded in the bottom of the first as they put one run on the board. Charles and Jessie got things started by each hitting singles. A ground out by Rae VanMilligan scored Charles and advanced Jessie to third base. The next batter struck out, closing the inning.

GVSU added another run in the fourth inning in similar fashion to the first inning. The Peacocks picked up an error and the Lakers hit a double to score their third run.

The Peacocks scored two runs in the fifth inning when Pelds smacked a double to tie up the game 3-3. Grand Valley State hit another run in the sixth and seventh inning to seal their 5-3 victory over Upper Iowa.

The Peacocks totaled eight hits in the contest. Church, Charles and Serah Shafer each tallied two hits at the plate.

Rylee McGonigle lasted seven all innings on the mound for the Peacocks. She allowed nine hits and five runs while striking out two batters and walking one.
