University of Mary 12 – Upper Iowa 8
In game one of the series, UIU's offense forced several mistakes by the UMary defense in the early goings. The Peacocks jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the end of the second inning, highlighted by a
Samuel Grushkin sac fly to center that scored two runs. After the Marauders got on the board via a sac fly in the third, the Peacocks responded with three more runs behind hits by
Ethan Sawyer and
JJ Vargas to take an 8-1 lead.
Over the next two innings, UMary quickly began to chip into the lead. The Marauders scored their next six runs off of extra-base hits, including twice hitting two-run home runs, to cut the lead to 8-7. The visiting team took the lead in the sixth inning and tacked on three more insurance runs in the seventh while keeping the Peacocks off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.
Carson Fagan (1-0) earned the win after pitching three innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out three batters.
Austin Shingledecker (1-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs on one hit and three walks with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings. Mark Schommer picked up his first save of the season, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
University of Mary 6 – Upper Iowa 2
The UMary offense was able to take advantage of a handful of defensive miscues by the Peacocks to get on the board before a two-run blast by Josh Walker made it a 4-0 ballgame in the fifth inning. The Marauders would add a run in the sixth and seventh inning to push their lead to 6-0.
The Peacock offense was held in check by UMary starter Austin Wagner for most of the afternoon. UIU managed to score a couple runs in the seventh thanks to an error and an RBI single by
Victor Plaz before the Marauders were able to shut down the rally for their second win of the series.
Wagner (3-0) earned the win by allowing only one run on five hits with four strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Keaton Parker (0-3) took the loss allowing five runs on five hits and five walks but managed to strike out seven batters in six innings. Schommer threw a scoreless inning to pick up his second save of the season.
Upper Iowa 9 – University of Mary 8
A balance between great pitching and consistent offense for most of the game led to a UIU victory in the series finale. The Peacocks scored the first seven runs of the game, highlighted by White's two-run blast to left field. After the Marauders scored twice in the sixth inning, UIU answered back through Luzum, who sent a towering blast over the right field fence to make it a 9-2 score.
From that point, it was déjà vu for UIU as UMary began to chip away into the lead thanks to a solo home run in the seventh and four runs fueled by three singles in the eighth. An additional run in the ninth inning made it a 9-8 scoreline before the Peacocks settled down and recorded the final two outs of the game to seal the victory.
