Bulldogs Wean Out Win Over Peacocks in Low-Scoring Affair

Upper Iowa traveled to Kirksville, Mo. to take on a well-oiled football team in Truman State, coming up just shy in a 14-7 decision. TSU scored their first touchdown of the evening in the first quarter and UIU responded with their first and only score of the afternoon in the second quarter. The game remained tied 7-7 until the Bulldogs scored the last touchdown of the contest in the third quarter to seal the 14-7 victory.

The Bulldogs scored both of their touchdowns on the ground through their quarterback, Nolan Hair, who tallied 53 yards rushing on nine attempts in addition to completing 12 of 14 passes for 107 yards.

The purple and white defense was stifling as they rejected the Peacocks' potential first score of the game with seven minutes left in the second quarter. After a 22-yard reception from Mante Morrow that put Upper Iowa at the 1-yard line with a fresh set of downs, the Peacocks were unable to convert a touchdown after four rushing attempts, turning the ball over.

However, it was the UIU defense that stepped up big this time as they only allowed the Bulldogs eight yards of offense on their next possession before earning the ball back. This time the Peacocks were able to execute. With the ball at the TSU 9 on 2nd and 9, Darryl Overstreet Jr. completed a pass to Eddie Burgess for their only touchdown of the contest. Burgess collected his seventh receiving touchdown of the season.

Truman State continued to lean on their defense as they recorded five sacks for a loss of 31 yards. Their top three tacklers were all in double digits as they combined for 37 of the team's tackles, led by Peyton Carr with 15.

In addition, the Peacocks attempted one field goal of the evening in the third quarter and it was blocked by the home team's defense.

TSU's Hair threw four passes for 62 yards in their opening possession of the third quarter to put the Bulldogs at the UIU 1-yard line. A short rush up the middle by Hair bumped the home team's advantage to 14-7, which held for the remainder of the game.

Keontae Luckett led the Peacocks in rushing yards with 62, followed by Aboubacar Barry with 52. Morrow tallied 57 yards receiving followed by Cam Williams with 46.

Nevan Foss led the UIU defense with 7 tackles while Tade Parsons, Peyton Bieber and Tanner Lukavsky with six tackles each.

Upper Iowa concludes their regular season at home next Saturday as they host Quincy University for an 11 a.m. kickoff.
