The Upper Iowa volleyball team began their weekend at the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center in Indianapolis, Ind. against the Greyhounds and fell in a 3-1 decision. The Peacocks picked up their only victory of the evening in the second set with a score of 25-19, but dropped the first, third and fourth set in scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-17. UIU fell to 5-5 in conference play and 10-14 on the season, while the win for UIndy bumped them up to 5-5 in the GLVC and 16-9 overall.
Upper Iowa started off the first set with a 5-0 advantage, but allowed the home team to go on a 7-1 to take a 10-9 lead. The Peacocks were up 19-18, but let the Greyhounds go on another 7-1 slide to take control and win the set, six of those points fueled by kills.
The newcomer duo of
Maria Winter and
Alexis Moses pushed the team to a 15-10 lead in the second set with a combination of blocks and kills. The two teams continued to trade points back and forth until the Peacocks claimed the set 25-19.
The third set was tied up at 22 apiece but the Greyhounds put together a short 3-1 push to grab their second set of the evening as they recorded their game-high of 17 kills in a set.
The home team wrapped things up as they came out on top in a 25-17 decision in the fourth set. Indianapolis recorded another 17 kills (.298) as Upper Iowa only tallied 11 (.055%). The Peacocks were ahead 16-13 until the Greyhounds rallied off a 12-1 run to defeat UIU.
Both teams tallied 61 kills on the evening, but UIndy edged out the Peacocks in hitting percentage with .251 in comparison to .177. The Greyhound also rejected 11 of Peacocks' attempts at the net while Upper Iowa only registered five blocks on the night.
Zoe Semelroth led the team in kills with 18 and was followed by
Maria Winter with 13.
Nicole Pozorski dished out 52 assists while
Kaci Beesecker recorded 25 digs followed by
Madelyn Rettler with 21.
Hannah Sabotin paced UIndy with eight blocks.
Alexis Moses led the Peacocks at the net with four blocks.
The Peacocks are back in action tomorrow in Romeoville, Ill. as they take on Lewis University at 3 p.m.
