Upper Iowa Ends Homestand With 1-0 Loss

The Peacocks were unable to win back-to-back home games as they have suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Rockhurst Hawks.

The Hawks first shot on goal in the 13th minute would result in the only goal of the game. Rockhurst's great ball movement led to a goal by junior midfielder Jacopo Belardo who was assisted by senior defender Cristoforo LiCavoli and junior defender Jeremiah Musa. A pair of graduates in forward Thomas Walle and midfielder Daigo Adachi nearly answered with goals of their own in the 15th and 17th minute, which were saved by graduate goalkeeper Fabio D'Errico. The Hawks had a great opportunity to score a second goal in the 19th minute, when they faced a 2 on 0 situation. That was until sophomore defender Noah Gjervik made an incredible chase down steal, and would follow that up by deflecting Rockhurst's shot-on-goal off target just a few seconds later. With only 30 seconds remaining, sophomore goalkeeper JJ Gonzalez-Hayes made a phenomenal one-handed jumping save, which was his first of four saves he recorded in the match.

Gonzalez-Hayes' second save came seven minutes into the second half after the Hawks were awarded a corner kick. Their shot was headed towards the left corner of the goal, before they were denied by a diving save. Sophomore midfielder Mateo Rodriguez was inches away from tying the game, as his shot made it past the goalie, deflected off the post, and bounced off the crossbar. UIU's final chance to tie the game came in the 86th minute, but junior forward Frider Blunck's shot was saved. The Peacocks would lose the game 1-0 and now have a record of 5-4-2.

Upper Iowa will be back on the road for their next two games. UIU will go up against 2-5-2 Missouri-St. Louis on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. before playing a much better 6-1-4 McKendree on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 2:30 p.m.
