Peacocks Unable to Upset Lewis in Final Home Game

Upper Iowa has lost their final home game of the season, by a score of 2-0 to the Lewis Flyers.

The Peacocks started sophomore keeper Jamie Kerkvliet for the second game in a row, and she made a quick impact recording two saves within the first ten minutes of action. Upper Iowa responded with multiple fastbreak opportunities, with sophomore forward Rachyl Benavides' first shot sailing wide right in the 15th minute. Freshman forward Meghan Zwicker attempted the Peacocks first shot on goal into the top left corner, but she was denied by a great save. Neither team would attempt another shot on goal, resulting in the half ending with a 0-0 score.

Kerkvliet recorded three more saves by the 62nd minute, while UIU had two great looks which were both saved. Benavides and sophomore midfielder Nevaeh James attempted their first shots on goal in the 56th and 59th minute. Kerkvliet made an incredible diving save in the 66th minute, but her deflection was recovered by Lewis' junior forward Melisa Hadzic whose shot found the back of the net. Lewis would build on this momentum scoring their second goal of the game less than two minutes later, on a great shot by sophomore forward Breanna Culver. UIU's offense played very well together in the final twenty minutes, beating the defense numerous times while attempting four shots on goal. Freshman defender Maile Kapualeinani Kehano attempted back-to-back shots on goal in the 84th and 85th minute which were saved by senior keeper Bekah Nielsen. Despite a very solid first half, the Peacocks were unable to keep up with Lewis, who now has eight wins on the season.

The Peacocks will travel to the state of Missouri for their final two games of the season. UIU will go up against Missouri S&T on Friday, Oct. 27 at 5 p.m. before facing Maryville in the season finale on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 12 p.m.
