Peacocks Pluck Their First Conference Win Over Bearcats

Upper Iowa football earned their first Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season after defeating Southwest Baptist in a 35-13 decision. The Peacocks executed a balanced scoring attack as they recorded one touchdown in each quarter, and two touchdowns in the fourth. UIU improved to 3-5 overall (1-3 GLVC) after the win, while the Bearcats dropped to 2-6 on the year and 1-3 in conference play.

The Peacocks were able to put points up on the board in their first possession of the game. Darryl Overstreet Jr. pitched a short pass left to Willy Camacho who ran the ball all the way to the SBU 1-yard line. Several plays later, on the 3rd and 2, Overstreet found Eddie Burgess in the endzone for their first score of the game.

Southwest Baptist notched a field goal five minutes into the second quarter to trail the home team 7-3. UIU responded with a touchdown on a 10-yard run from RJ Wells to extend their lead 14-3, but SBU converted another field goal right before the conclusion of the first half to keep within reach, cutting the deficit to 14-6.

The third quarter was scoreless until there were 11 seconds left on the clock. After a short punt from the Bearcats that landed the Peacocks 24 yards out, Overstreet Jr. was able to run the ball downtown into SBU territory for the team's third touchdown of the game and the 21-6 lead.

Three penalties from the Bearcats during a UIU possession in the fourth advanced the Peacocks up the field to set them up for another touchdown. Jayden Mitchell rushed the ball eight yards into the endzone for his first score of the evening. With three minutes remaining in the game, Mitchell scored another touchdown, this time on a 47-yard jaunt for the 35-6 upper hand.

SBU snuck in their only touchdown of the game with 23 seconds left on a 37-yard gain up the middle, locking in a 35-13 final in favor of the Peacocks.

Overstreet Jr. completed 14 of 23 passes for 172 yards, his longest toss being 49 yards. Mitchell led both teams in the ground game with 108 yards, while Willy Camacho recorded 63 yards on three receptions.

The Bearcats' quarterback Collin Sutton completed 12 of 20 attempts, while also leading the team in rushing yards with 74.

The UIU defense picked up three sacks in tonight's contest and John Butsch lead the team in tackles with nine.

The Peacocks are on the road next weekend at the University of Indianapolis for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
