The Upper Iowa men's golf team teed off for the first time this fall at the Super Regional Preview in Winona, Minnesota. After registering a first-round score of 314, the Peacocks recorded the fifth best second-round score at 301 to finish the competition in 10th place with a team score of 615 (+47).
The hosts Winona State University finished at the top of the 14-team field at The Bridges Golf Course with a team score of 578 (+10). They were followed by Washburn University with a score of 590 (+22) and Wayne State University with a score of 591 (+23).
On the individual leaderboard, Winona's Alessandro Trenta and Gabe Goodman finished first and second respectively with scores of 141 (-1) and 143 (+1). Three golfers from separate schools tied for third place with a score of 144 (+2).
Tate Carlson led the way for UIU with a total score of 150 (+8), finishing in a tie for 19th place after a second-round score of 72 (E). He was followed by
Owen Davison, who tied for 50th place with a score of 154 (+12), and
Nathan Petrak, who recorded a total score of 155 (+13) to finish in a tie for 52nd place.
Nolan Ross and
Nolan Leaton registered final scores of 159 (+17) and 163 (+21) respectively. Competing as individuals, Ashton Martens,
Jacob Mahloch, and Bryan Verdon recorded scores of 160 (+18), 173 (+31), and 179 (+37) in their first action of the season.
Carlson finished the competition fifth among all competitors in Par 4 scoring with a stroke average of 4.05 (+1). He also finished tied for ninth in birdies with six.
"I'm proud of the way the guys battled today," said Head Coach
Mike Lewis. "It was good to see Tate and Owen finish off a round to lead us into the second round. We will take inventory of how we played this week and build towards our next tournament."
Up next, the Peacocks will return to the state of Minnesota to compete in the Watkins Invitational. The competition, hosted by Winona, will take place at the Jewel Golf Club beginning on September 26.
