Peacocks Tie Penalty Thriller With Last Minute Equalizer

Upper Iowa women's soccer played to a 2-2 draw this afternoon in a matchup against the unbeaten University of Mary. The Peacocks shift to 2-3-3 (1-1-3 NSIC) for the season and the Marauders move to 6-0-2 (3-0-2 NSIC) on the year.

A lively start to the match was dominated by the UMary attack, with intermittent counters from the Peacocks led to Haley Ramberg being fouled in the box. Katie Samuels stepped up and saw her effort saved by the opposition goalkeeper.

Upper Iowa managed to break the run of play in the 15th minute when a failed clearance from a throw-in found its way to the feet of Alex Garcia. Garcia shifted the ball away from two on rushing defenders before burying her shot into the bottom right hand corner for her first of the season and second of her Peacock career.  UMary continued to dominate proceedings however struggled to threaten Isabelle Wagner in the UIU goal until the 40th minute of the game.

The second half was a tale of penalties and late drama. Wagner, in the UIU goal, was deemed to have brought down a UMary forward in the penalty area. Lemmon converted for the first of her two goals on the day. In similar fashion, Willenbring was penalized in the 72nd minute for bringing down a Marauder forward. Lemmon stepped up for the second time in the game. This time Wagner was equal to the spot kick but was unable to stop the rebound and University of Mary gained a 2-1 lead.

The Peacocks continued to push for an equalizer and they finally found it through senior Haley Ramberg who managed to put the ball through the legs of the opposing goalkeeper from close range with just 50 seconds left on the clock.

Upper Iowa faces Minot State University on Sunday at 12 p.m. for their second contest of the weekend.
