Upper Iowa Claims First Victory on the Season Over Rockhurst

Upper Iowa women's soccer was deemed victorious for their first win of the season against Rockhurst University. The competition this afternoon resulted in a 1-0 final. Head Coach Josh Davis saw his first win as a Peacock. This win brings their overall record to 1-1-0.

The team was active on the defensive end of the ball. The Hawks took a total of 17 shots, but the Peacock defenders kept them off the scoreboard completely. This group was highlighted by Leah Willenbring, Katrina Kazluski and Grace Birdsey. The opportunities that the Hawks had were highly contested.

Along with those key players, Goalkeeper Jamie Kirkvliet stopped all six shots on goal, earning a shutout in her collegiate debut.

Freshman Rachyl Benavides scored her first collegiate goal at the 31st minute mark of this afternoon's match up. After picking the pocket of a Rockhurst player, the Elk Grove, Calif. native  hurdled down field towards the goal. With a swift kick, she found the back of the net, resulting in a 1-0 score that held for the rest of the game.

The Peacocks got to a lot of free balls and had several other close scoring opportunities. Along with contribution from Benavides, a handful of other Peacock athletes were key in putting the pressure on the Rockhurst defense.

Chloe Jarosz and Grace Birdsley were crucial in tracking down the ball and pushing out in transition on the offensive end. Alex Garcia and Rachyl Benavides tied for the team high of two shots.

Upper Iowa women's soccer sees their next action against Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo. The match will start at 3:00pm. Fans can follow along with live stats or a webcast by visiting UIUPeacocks.com/Live!
