Upper Iowa men's soccer traveled to Springfield, Mo. to take on Drury University in the opening game of their fall campaign. The match played at Greenwood Field Stadium sets the Peacocks to an 0-1 start and the Panthers a 1-0 record.
The Peacocks fell against Drury 4-1 in the contest. There were 11 players that saw their UIU debut in the match. Yannis Sapim was the only goalscorer on the team. The squad battled it out for the first 40 minutes of the match before the Panthers netted their two goals, the second score following shortly after the first.
Drury's next goal was scored at the 50 minute mark. Upper Iowa's Sapim scored his first goal as a Peacock. The opportunity was presented by an assist from
Angel Tapia. The score sat at 3-1 as Upper Iowa pushed to get back into the match until Drury was able to cap things off with their fourth and final goal in the 81st minute.
Drury was active offensively taking a total of 17 shots on the night compared to the Peacocks who took 6. Sapim led the crew with two shots. Archie Watts saw a lot of action at the goalkeeper position and managed to pull down three saves in the contest.
"We came down to play a tough Drury side, with a young group of guys. We've seen a lot of progression through preseason and we know it'll come in time," noted Graduate Assistant Charlie Ward. "We will continue to work hard, as always, and good things will come for us."
