Upper Iowa hosted the No. 11 Lakers of Grand Valley State University in women's lacrosse at Harms-Eischeid Stadium on Friday evening. The Peacocks got a hat trick from
Maya Chesky, her second of the season, but fell to the nationally-ranked Lakers by a score of 22-3.
GVSU improved to 13-1 on the year and 4-0 in the GLIAC, while UIU fell to 0-7 on the season and 0-5 in the conference.Â
The Lakers took a 9-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and stretched their run to include the first 11 scores, but back-to-back goals by Chesky midway through second quarter allowed UIU to cut into the margin. Grand Valley State scored four goals over the final minutes of the half to take a 15-2 lead into the locker room.
Chesky nabbed her third goal and second hat trick of the season in the third quarter. GVSU scored four times in the third and added three to their tally in the fourth to win 22-3.Â
The Lakers outshot the Peacocks 35-6 in the match and claimed a 28-4 advantage in shots on goal. While UIU turned the ball over 17 times, the Peacocks were able to force GVSU into nine turnovers. Each team attempted nine clears, the Lakers converted all of them while the Peacocks were successful on six of the nine.
Sophie Conroy scored a team-high five goals, while Kate DeYoung had four goals and an assist. Four players scored a pair of goals including Ashleigh Rothe and Sydney Stone, who each handed out two assists as well. In total, 11 Lakers scored goals and a twelfth player had two assists to their name.Â
Chesky tied the school record for goals in a game with three matching her season-high from the game at Quincy to open the season. She now has 10 goals on the year to lead the Peacock offense. Chesky also caused two turnovers and picked up four ground balls.
The Peacocks will play against the Panthers of Davenport University on Sunday, Apr. 10 at noon in Harms-Eischeid Stadium.
