No. 22 Vikings Power Past Peacock Baseball

The No. 22 Vikings of Augustana University powered past the Peacocks for a double header sweep in Northern Sun Conference action. Augie won game one 14-5 behind 20 hits and then won game two 15-1 in seven innings fueled by 16 more hits. Upper Iowa fell to 9-26 overall and 7-16 in the NSIC, while the Vikings improved to 36-7-1 and 26-4 in the conference.

Upper Iowa scored three runs in the top of the first inning of game one thanks to an RBI-single by Sam Grushkin through the left side, an RBI-ground out by Cael Luzum and a Viking error on the infield. The home team answered with four runs in the bottom of the first, second and fourth innings to rally back and take a 12-3 lead through four innings.

Both teams scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning setting the final margin at 14-5. Tanner Stein drove in UIU's fourth run with a sacrifice fly to right field and Nicolas Vite singled to center to plate the fifth run.

Colin Lacey (3-3) took the loss after three innings in his start, while Gunnar Foegen and Brady Stevens worked in relief during the final three innings. Jake Hilmer and Grushkin each had two hits for UIU at the plate.

Seth Miller (6-1) posted his sixth victory allowing five runs, four earned, over his six innings. Carter Howell and Will Olson each registered four hits to lead the Viking offense.

In game two, Jed Schmidt (1-0) got the start for Augie and went five innings allowing just one hit while striking out three. Grushkin had the hit off Schmidt and tallied his second hit with a home run that accounted for the Peacocks' only run in the game. The Peacock third baseman's solo blast came in the sixth inning.

By the time that UIU got on the scoreboard, Augustana had 15 runs across the plate thanks to two runs in the first, five in the second and four runs in both the third and fourth innings.

In the second game, the Viking offense was led by Howell and Jack Hines; each of the Augie players had three hits.

Keaton Parker (1-7) took the loss after throwing the first two innings. After Austin Shingledecker and Sam Marhefke threw an inning each, Jason Katz and Braden Albert each threw a scoreless inning of relief.

Upper Iowa will now get ready to take on No. 19 Minnesota State University, Mankato on Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 30 and May 1. The Peacocks and Mavericks will play two games on Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m. and then a single, nine-inning game on Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.
