Peacocks Close Home Slate in Loss to Hawks

The Peacock women's lacrosse team played their final home game on Tuesday as they welcomed the Hawks of Quincy University to Harms-Eischeid Stadium. Upper Iowa lost the contest 26-10, but the team did mark a few new firsts during the action. With the loss, UIU falls to 0-10 overall, while Quincy improves to 6-8 on the year.

Upper Iowa scored the first goal of the match for the first time in their young history as a NCAA Division II program and reached double-figure goals in a match (10) for the first time in program history as well. UIU's Maya Chesky set a new high mark for goals in a game with six on Tuesday afternoon. The sophomore midfielder was able to find the back of the net on two-thirds of her shots in the game.

Chesky put the Peacocks ahead 1-0 on an assist from Morgynn Spears and the duo repeated the action a few minutes later to knot the score at 2-2. Quincy scored two more goals, but then Chesky scored an early hat trick to pull the Peacocks back within one, 4-3, with six minutes to play in the opening quarter.

The Hawks scored seven of the next eight goals to push out to an 11-4 lead midway through the second quarter. Upper Iowa closed the half well outscoring their guests 3-3 over the final seven and a half minutes.

After coming out of halftime with a 13-7 lead, Quincy put the game out of reach in the third quarter fueled by a 10-1 scoring run in the quarter. The Hawks added three goals in the fourth quarter, while the home team dropped two more into the goal to set the final score at 26-10.

Upper Iowa took 21 shots including nine in the second quarter and placed 18 of them on frame. UIU also forced the Hawks into 10 turnovers during the game. The Peacocks notched 11 successful clears in 14 attempts.

Quincy's Danielle Robinson recorded 10 goals, while Josphina Szmanda and Patricia Chavira each scored five goals for the Hawks.

In addition to Chesky's big day of scoring, Spears scored twice and handed out four assists. McKenzie Mohlencamp scored twice and Marisa Malmgren registered one assist.

The Peacocks will close out their regular season on Friday, Apr. 22 in St. Paul, Minn. Upper Iowa will line up against Concordia University, St. Paul in a GLIAC match beginning at 5 p.m.
