The Upper Iowa men's golf team wrapped up play at the 2022 NSIC Men's Golf Championship on Saturday at Adams Pointe Golf Club in Blue Springs, Missouri. The Peacocks finished in third place, which ties the program's best finish set back in 2007, with a total score of 901 (+37). UIU had previously finished fourth four other times at the NSIC Championship in the spring including last season.
Concordia-St. Paul rallied in round three to run away with its first NSIC Men's Golf Championship. The Golden Bears, which trailed UIU by four strokes entering the final day, shot a tournament low round of 290 to win by nine stokes. The Golden Bears, which shot rounds of 297, 295, and 290 for a total score of 882 (+18), finished with three of the top four golfers in the final standings.
CSP's Thomas Huettl earned medalist honors as he finished with a score of 214 (-2) after rounds of 70, 73, and 71. He finished seven strokes ahead of teammate Brandon Sperling (221) and Minot State's Carlos Caloca (221). Sperling's round of 68 on the final day was the low round for the championship.
UIU finished with three golfers inside the top 10 for the tournament.
Nolan Leaton led the way for the Peacocks with a final score of 224 (+8), including rounds of 70 and 73, to finish in a tie for seventh.
Trent Shaw and
Tate Carlson each finished with identical final scores of 225 (+9) to tie for 10th place.
Jacob Mahloch rounded out the team score with a total of 228 (+12) to finish in a tie for 19th place.
Nathan Petrak recorded a score of 236 (+20) across three rounds to finish in a tie for 34th place.
As a team, UIU finished first in Par 4 scoring with a 4.17 stroke average (+26) for the tournament and finished third in Par 3 scoring with a 3.43 stroke average (+26). The Peacocks recorded 38 birdies across three rounds which was the second highest team total.
Individually, Shaw tied for first among all competitors in Par 4 scoring with a 4.07 stroke average (+2) while Mahloch tied for fourth with a 4.10 stroke average (+3). Leaton tied for third in Par 3 scoring with a 3.17 stroke average (+2). Carlson and Shaw finished second and third in birdies with 11 and 10 respectively while Leaton tied for seventh with seven.
