LAST WEEKEND IN PEACOCK WOMEN'S HOOPS… Upper Iowa endured a pair of narrow defeats as two impressive comeback efforts came up just short. UIU endured their second narrow defeat in as many games against Wayne State College, falling 74-72. Against Augustana University, the Peacocks shaved a 21-point lead to just one but fell 68-64.
PUNCH, COUNTERPUNCH… Upper Iowa's weekend was filled with back-and-forth battles. UIU led 12-6 over Wayne State, but a 22-12 second frame put WSC up 35-27 at the half. The Wildcats went ahead by 13 and led 70-58 with 4:32 to play, but the Peacocks pulled within two in the final minute with a 14-2 run. UIU forced turnovers on the last two WSC possessions but could not convert on two looks to tie or take the lead, falling 74-72. The Peacocks spotted the Vikings 14 points to open their next game, but an 11-0 answer from UIU narrowed the gap. A 13-0 AUGIE run in the second quarter gave Augustana a 35-17 halftime lead, and UIU's deficit grew to 21 with 7:32 left in the third. The Peacocks flipped the script with a 21-5 run, closing the quarter down six, 46-40. UIU pulled within one at 50-49, but a 13-4 Viking run gave them a double-digit lead. The Peacocks scored seven straight to pull within one possession but fell 68-64.
CENTER OF ATTENTION… Savannah Domeyer broke out with back-to-back double-doubles over the weekend. The center set season-high scoring and rebounding totals in consecutive games, averaging 13.5 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks, one assist, and one steal in 22.5 minutes off the bench. Domeyer shot 11-15 (75%) from the floor, made one three-pointer, and converted 4-5 from the free throw line. She finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks against WSC before compiling 17 points, 13 rebounds, two blocks, and two steals against AUGIE. The weekend totals far exceeded Domeyer's season averages of 3.2 points and 2.7 rebounds. The senior ranks seventh in the NSIC with 1.1 blocks per game, averaging 1.7 in 2022. Domeyer needs three blocks to pass Christa Hammel (111) for most in Upper Iowa history.
MIA IN ACTION… Mia Huberty led the Peacocks in scoring over the weekend, averaging 17 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. The guard set a season-high with 21 points against Augustana, shooting 8-12 overall and 4-8 from deep. Against WSC, Huberty tallied 13 points, four assists, and three rebounds while shooting an efficient 4-8 overall, 3-4 from deep, and 2-2 from the charity stripe.
Lydia Haack also averaged double figures in scoring with 10.5 and recorded 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.
Jessica Musgrave nearly averaged a double-double with 9.5 points and 9.0 rebounds as well as 3.5 assists per game.
MANAGING THE MUSTANGS, PT. 2... Southwest Minnesota State holds an 11-9 (8-8 NSIC) record and is fourth in the South Division. The Mustangs are coming off a weekend sweep where they won 63-46 against Minnesota State University Mankato and 94-85 in double-overtime against Concordia University, St. Paul. Meleah Reinhart leads SMSU and ranks eighth in the NSIC with 14.8 PPG. Sadie Stelter averages 13.8 points and a team-high 5.8 rebounds. Abuk Akoi (8.6 pts, 5.7 reb, 3 blk), Sam Wall (8.2 pts), and Jenna Borchers (7.9 pts, 3.6 reb, 2.4 ast) contribute to a Mustang team averaging 67.6 points with a plus-2.1 scoring margin.
UIU VS. SMSU, PT. 2… The Mustangs mustered a 75-51 win over the Peacocks in the teams' first meeting this season on Dec. 11. UIU saw an 8-3 start answered by an 8-2 run, but the Peacocks held a 13-11 edge through one. SMSU opened the second frame with an 8-0 spurt, but UIU answered with a 9-0 run and faced a narrow 31-28 deficit at halftime. Despite a competitive first half and fourth quarter, the game was decided in the third frame thanks to a 28-8 Mustang edge in the period.
Brooke Evenson (16 pts), Haack (15 pts), and Musgrave (9 pts, 8 reb) paced the Peacocks, but SMSU had five players score between nine and 12 points to secure the win.
COUNTERING THE COUGARS, PT. 2... Sioux Falls has compiled a 13-10 (8-8 NSIC) record and sits in fifth in the South Division. The Cougars have dropped four straight, including a 74-65 decision against CSP and an 86-66 loss to MSU last weekend. Megan Fannin paces the Cougars with 13.9 points per game. Krystal Carlson averages 10.1 points and 4.7 rebounds, while Dallie Hoskinson notches 8.5 points, 7.4 boards, and 3.9 assists. USF ranks sixth in the NSIC with 69.2 points per game while allowing the fourth-fewest points, 63.4. The Cougars are scheduled to play Winona State University before facing UIU.
UIU VS. USF, PT. 2… The Cougars collected a 73-50 win over UIU in the teams' first meeting this season on Dec. 10. USF used big runs in the first and second quarters to establish control of the scoreboard early. A 12-0 run gave Sioux Falls a 17-9 first-quarter lead, but UIU battled back to cut their deficit to three, 19-16. That is as close as UIU could come as a 15-4 Cougar run made it 34-20 at the half before USF added to their edge in the second half. Haack (17 pts, 4 ast), Musgrave (15 pts, 6 reb), and Evenson (10 pts, 7 reb) combined for 84% of UIU's points. Megan Fannin led the Cougars with 20 points and six rebounds, Dallie Hoskinson had an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double, and Jemae Nichols pulled in 10 boards for USF.
TAMING THE TIGERS… Iowa Wesleyan has played to a 15-4 record and is first in the Continental Athletic Conference with a 6-0 record. The NAIA program is led by the CAC's second and fifth leading scorers, Kaya Moore (17.8) and Brittany West (16.2). Moore also leads the Tigers with 6.5 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game. West ranks third in the conference with a 53.1 FG percentage while leading the CAC in three-point (45.7) and free throw (88.5) percentage. Iowa Wesleyan leads the CAC with 72.2 points per game while allowing the fewest points in the conference, 51.9. A familiar face will be on the IWU sideline as assistant coach Sam Ofstad was a guard for Upper Iowa from 2015-17, starting 51 of 56 games over her two seasons as a Peacock.
