Peacocks Close Season With Home Matchup Against Mavericks Before Road Bout With Golden Bears

The Upper Iowa University women’s basketball team closes its 2021-22 season with a pair of NSIC South rematches. The Peacocks play their penultimate game at home against Minnesota State University Mankato at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17, before heading to St. Paul, Minn., to close their campaign against Concordia University, St. Paul at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19.

THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK WOMEN'S HOOPS… The Upper Iowa University women's basketball team closes its 2021-22 season with a pair of NSIC South rematches. The Peacocks play their penultimate game at home against Minnesota State University Mankato at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17, before heading to St. Paul, Minn., to close their campaign against Concordia University, St. Paul at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19.

LAST WEEKEND IN PEACOCK WOMEN'S HOOPS… Upper Iowa secured a weekend sweep with wins against Southwest Minnesota State University and the University of Sioux Falls. On Friday against the Mustangs, UIU won 68-51 after four Peacocks scored in double-figures. Against the Cougars on Saturday, Upper Iowa celebrated senior night with a 76-67 win that saw five Peacocks crack double-digits.

SAILING INTO THE SENIOR SUNSET… The Peacocks sent off their senior duo of Sidney Brastad and Savannah Domeyer with a win on Saturday night. Brastad has appeared in 25 games over her two seasons with the Peacocks since transferring from Northwest Missouri State University. She has notched 27 points, 23 rebounds, and eight assists as a Peacock. Domeyer has played in 89 games over her five-year UIU tenure. She has tallied 506 points, 346 rebounds, and 114 blocks over her career, good for the No. 1 shot-swatting spot in UIU history.
 
TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAMWORK… Four Peacocks scored double figures against Southwest Minnesota State to combine for 81% of UIU's points. Jessica Musgrave scored 17 and tied a career-high with 15 boards. Mia Huberty had 14 points, while Katie Tornstrom scored 13 with seven rebounds and three steals off the bench. Domeyer notched her third consecutive double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds while adding two blocks. UIU upped their double-digit scorers by one against Sioux Falls. Domeyer led the way with 16 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and three blocks off the bench. Lydia Haack finished with 14 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Musgrave added 12 points and eight boards, while Huberty shot 3-5 from deep to score 11. Brooke Evenson tallied her fifth double-double this season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
 
DEFENDERS OF DORMAN… This season, Upper Iowa is 6-7 on their home court compared to a 0-9 mark in true road games. The Peacocks have outscored opponents by 4.6 points (67.6 to 63), are plus-five on the glass (41.5 to 36.5), and average nearly three more assists (12.5 to 9.7) on Prochaska Court. UIU is used to shooting the three-point shot better in Fayette as they outshoot opponents 32.2% to 27.4% with one more make per game (6.8 to 5.8). The Peacocks held SMSU and USF to a combined 6-41 (14.6%) clip from downtown last weekend. Holding the Mustangs to a 16-63 (25.4%) clip from the floor helped UIU grab 57 rebounds, their third-most this season and sixth-most all-time.
 
STREAKING AND PEAKING… The consistent, strong play of five Peacocks has stood out recently. The UIU handful of Huberty (13.7), Musgrave (12), Domeyer (11.5), Haack (11), and Tornstrom (10.8) have averaged double-digit scoring over the last six games. The Peacocks have gone 3-3 against NSIC foes over the stretch, including 3-1 at home. Upper Iowa has averaged 70 points with a plus-2.7 margin while outshooting (.387 to .375 FG, .307 to .254 3PT), out-rebounding (43.5 to 35.5), and out-assisting (12.7 to 10.7) opponents. Huberty has shot 27-55 (49.1) overall and 15-31 (48.4%) from deep. Musgrave has averaged 9.3 rebounds while shooting 28-65 (43.1%) from the floor and 15-17 (88.2%) from the free throw line. Haack has contributed four assists and one steal per game. Tornstrom has a .431/.423/.909 clip from the floor, three-point line, and charity stripe. Over the last five games, Domeyer has averaged 13 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, and 1.2 assists while shooting 23-42 (54.8%) overall and 18-21 (85.7%) at the free throw line.

MANEUVERING AGAINST THE MAVERICKS, PT. 2... Minnesota State holds an 18-5 (14-5 NSIC) record and leads the South Division. The Mavericks are coming off a weekend sweep where they won 95-58 over Wayne State College and 80-72 against Augustana University. Joey Batt leads MSU and ranks eighth in the NSIC with 15.3 points per game. Destinee Bursch adds 11.9 points, Maddy Olson scores 9.8 per game, and Taylor Theusch averages 9.3. Four Mavericks average 6.1 to 7.8 points for an MSU offense scoring an NSIC-high 78.7 points with a 10.8 margin. Batt (2.7) and Olson (2.3) rank second and fourth, respectively, in the NSIC in steals per game as MSU snares a conference-best 14.9 per contest.

UIU VS. MSU, PT. 2… The Mavericks mustered an 88-48 win over the Peacocks in the team's first meeting on Dec. 2, UIU's worst loss this season. The score was 6-5 through two minutes, but MSU went on a 41-5 run between the first and second quarters and led by 35 at the half, 54-19. After going down 41, Upper Iowa went on a 13-3 stretch that featured nine points from Evenson on a 3/3 clip from behind the arc. Evenson led UIU with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Callista Rochon-Baker scored a season-high 10. Joey Batt's 19 paced five Mavericks in double figures.

GRAPPLING WITH THE GOLDEN BEARS, PT. 2... Concordia, St. Paul has compiled a 16-7 (12-7 NSIC) record and sits second in the South Division. Last weekend, the Golden Bears swept with a 65-64 win over Augustana and a 76-71 win over Wayne State. Lindsey Bechler leads CSP with 14.3 points, grabs 5.8 rebounds, and blocks an NSIC-high 3.3 shots per game. The reigning NSIC South Player of the Week, Sydney Zgutowicz, averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds last weekend, following up a 20-point game with a 16-rebound game. She averages 11.9 points and 8.3 rebounds, the conference's second-best rebounder. Meghan DuBois averages 12.3 points and an NSIC-best 5.5 assists. Riley Wheatcraft (11.9) and Jadyn Hanson (10.2) also average double-figures as CSP's 72.3 points rank second in the conference. The Golden Bears are scheduled to play Winona State University before facing UIU.

UIU VS. CSP, PT. 2… The Golden Bears garnered a 70-61 win over UIU in the teams' first meeting this season on Dec. 4. UIU used a 9-0 run to go up 9-3, but a 16-0 answer by CSP gave the visitors the edge. Haack helped the Peacocks erase a 14-point halftime deficit with 12 points in a 19-6 UIU run, tying the score at 51 points apiece. Upper Iowa pulled within one at 61-60, but a 9-1 run clinched the win for Concordia, St. Paul. Haack led UIU with 24 points and four assists, shooting a season-best 4-7 from deep. Musgrave had a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double, while Lexie Lodermeier notched season highs with nine points and 11 boards. Becher led CSP with 14 points, and seven Golden Bears scored between eight and 14 points.
