Upper Iowa rounded up their weekend of play in a matchup against (No. 5) Saginaw Valley State. Despite their impressive second half play, the Peacocks fell to the Cardinals 2-1. Saginaw improves to 10-0-4 (7-0-3 GLIAC). Upper Iowa shifted to 1-11-2 (0-8-1 GLIAC).
The Peacocks started slow within the opening minute as a shot from the Cardinals found its way past
Archie Watts in the Peacock goal. Saginaw Valley State continued to dominate the first half as Upper Iowa started to find their feet in the game.
The Cardinals doubled their lead in the 22nd minute on a training ground routine. A long throw-in from the right hand failed to be cleared before SVSU squared the ball to the GLIAC's top scorer Jonathan Monney for a 2-0 lead.
The Peacocks emerged from halftime with a second wind. Shots from
Jonathan Bayer and
Leart Wunsch tested the Saginaw goalkeeper. In the 69th minute, sophomore Alex Arriola was reintroduced into the game and had immediate impact. A long ball into the box from
Daniel Pranger looked to be heading into the goalkeepers gloves, only for Arriola to nip in front, along with
Jonathan Baylon, whose one touch pass played perfectly to
Leart Wunsch. Wunsch's shot was driven to the roof of the net, bringing the score to 2-1.
The Peacocks continued to mount a comeback. Within the final minute, all 11 Peacocks were in the opposite 18 yard box in a desperate last ditch attempt to tie the game, but were unsuccessful.
Upper Iowa men's soccer returns home for two fixtures against another nationally ranked opponent, Wisconsin-Parkside, on Friday, Oct. 21. They then welcome the Wildcats of Northern Michigan to Harms-Eischeid on Sunday, Oct. 23.
