Indoor Track Teams Return to Competition at Wartburg

The Peacock men and women's indoor track and field teams returned to action on Saturday at the Chelsey M. Henkenius Invitational hosted by Wartburg College. Upper Iowa placed third in both the men and women's events with limited participant rosters scoring 28 and 26 points, respectively.

Nathan Goranson sets a new record for UIU in the 600 meter.

The men's team broke a pair of program records including the 600-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay. Nathan Goranson eclipsed a 30-year old record set by John Kasper in 1992. Kasper ran his 600-meters in a time of 1:26.90. Goranson won the event on Saturday in a time of 1:26.15. The 4x400-meter relay team of Cameron Green, Teddy Ayden, Deion Jones and Kaden Ludwig also won their event and posted a new record time of 3:26.78, which beat last year's record setting run by nearly three seconds.

In addition to Goranson, the Peacocks ran well in the 600-meter race. Blake Smith placed third (1:29.06) and Bryce Baker was sixth (1:36.95). Brady Johnston and Dalton Baker were close behind in seventh and eighth in the event.

Upper Iowa got fourth and sixth place finishes from Michael Pace (12.56 meters) and Macklin Conrad (11.85 m) in the shot put, while David Hayes placed fifth in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.76 seconds. Kaitano Bateman ran the seventh-best 60-meter dash on the day in a time of 7.39 seconds.

The UIU women had their best results in the 200-meter dash thanks to a second-place finish for Nailea Espinoza (27.33) and fifth-place finish by Khanalia Kielo (28.04). Carolina Regalado just missed out on scoring points with a run in 28.24 seconds to place sixth.

Genevieve Chenoweth grabbed second place in the pole vault with a mark of 2.45 meters, while Kiana Maghanoy placed sixth in the shot put (10.27 meters) and seventh in the weight throw (11.77 meters). Jade Martin led four Peacock runners that placed between sixth and tenth in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:52.27. Ashley Donovan, Jadyn Schultz and Macey White rounded out the top ten in the race.

The teams will be back on the track next weekend when they compete at Cornell College on Saturday, Jan. 22.
