MAKIN' IT COUNT IN MISSOURI... In their first official match since Nov. 2019, the Upper Iowa University women's soccer team secured a 1-0 victory over Missouri Southern State University in Mankato, Minn. to improve to a 1-0 record on the year. After some back-and-forth play in the first half, junior
Leah Willenbring assisted freshman
Katrina Kazluski on a shot from just inside the box that found the back of the net and gave UIU the lead in the 30th minute. The Lions finished the half outshooting the Peacocks 7-5, but senior stalwart
Natalie Rudrud saved all three shots on goal as the UIU defense held MSSU scoreless through the first 45 minutes of play. Neither team managed to score in the second half of play as the UIU defense helped lock down the 1-0 shutout win. Senior defenders
Toni Powsey and
Aimee Sies joined Kazluski, Rudrud, and Willenbring as the Peacocks who played full time. Senior midfielder/forward
Jordan Zarate played 86 minutes with one shot attempt while redshirt junior
Katie Samuels applied the pressure and led the match with four shots (one on goal) in 69 minutes of action.
KICKIN' IT WITH KAZLUSKI... Freshman defender
Katrina Kazluski made an immediate impact on both ends of the pitch in her first collegiate match. The freshman scored the go-ahead and game-winning goal at the 29:21 mark in the first half of UIU's 1-0 win over MSSU. After giving the Peacocks the lead, Kazluski helped lock the match down on the defensive end as she played the full 90 minutes. The Poplar Grove, Ill. native was part of a UIU defense that allowed just 12 shots with only five coming on goal, all of which were saved by Rudrud. The Lions finished the match with a 12-10 lead in shots taken, a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal, and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks, but UIU made their chances count while stifling the MSSU attack to secure the shutout.
GETTIN' READY FOR THE RANGERS... The University of Wisconsin - Parkside comes into the matchup with a 1-1 record following a season-opening win over Winona State University before a loss to the University of Illinois Springfield in their last match. Against Winona State, Parkside went down by one after conceding the game's first goal in the 11th minute. The Rangers turned things around quickly as they scored the next three goals of the match in the 15th, 21st, and 66th minutes of action to claim a 3-1 victory. Parkside registered seven fewer shots (18 to 11), half as many shots on goal (10 to five), and five fewer corner kicks (six to five), but freshman goalkeeper Mia Guyton secured nine saves to help the Rangers win. Against Illinois Springfield, Parkside fell by a score of 2-0 after goals in the 27th and 81st minutes of play to even their season record at 1-1. The last time the Peacocks matched up against Parkside was on Sep. 15, 2019, in a match in Fayette that saw the Rangers claim a 2-0 win for their first victory of that season. The Rangers were picked to finish eighth out of nine teams in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll after compiling a record of 0-7-2 last season. Parkside is scheduled to play Drury University on Sep. 10 before their match against UIU.
LOOKIN' AHEAD… UIU will play their home opener and start conference play against Southwest Minnesota State University on Pattison Field in Fayette on Friday, Sep. 17 at 2:00 p.m. Fans can cheer on the Peacocks from the stands or follow along via webcast and live stats at UIUPeacocks.com/LIVE.
