Upper Iowa fell 6-5 in the season finale against Augustana University. The Peacocks held a lead over the 19th best NCAA DII team in the nation and the Central Region's top squad for seven innings. Jake Hilmer registered his 13th multi-hit game of the season and his 53rd total, good for third-place in the NSIC, while Duncan Snider struck out six in his final start as an Upper Iowa Peacock. Following the game, Upper Iowa moves to 13-26 overall, 11-21 in conference play while Augustana heads to 31-9 overall, 27-9 in the NSIC.
The Peacocks put two on the board in UIU's first at-bats. Jake Hilmer got the party going in the leadoff spot with a double that dropped into shallow right-field. Samuel Grushkin followed up with a single into the left-field gap bringing Hilmer home and advancing to second on the throw to the plate. Grushkin came around himself when Alex Greene reached on a strikeout down in the dirt then advanced to second on an errant throw to first base by the Vikings' catcher. Another run came manufactured in the second, Kyle Routhieaux doubled into left center before advancing to third on a Noah Gyldenvand sacrifice bunt and scoring on a wild pitch.
Each team registered one run in the third. Augustana's score came first on a pair of singles and a walk. Upper Iowa responded in the bottom half with a solo shot well beyond the fence in left-centerfield extending UIU's lead to 4-1. The round-tripper was Alex Greene's first career, capping off a strong freshman campaign.
The Vikings outscored the Peacocks 5-1 between the sixth and eighth innings. A pair of singles and a wild pitch scored one in the sixth. Another run came across in the seventh thanks to a walk, a single, and a throwing error committed by Upper Iowa. UIU responded with a run of their own maintaining a two-run advantage. Adrian Trujillo and Jake Hilmer reached on an error and a bunt single, respectively. Greene loaded the bases after being hit-by-a-pitch before Trujillo came home off the bat of Hogan Penny.
Augustana scored three in the top of the eighth to claim its first lead of the day thanks to a trio of hits and a hit batter. Neither squad scored again resulting in a 6-5 defeat to close out the Peacocks' 2021 campaign.
Duncan Snider got the start for Upper Iowa going 6.1 innings in a no-decision where he allowed three runs, two earned on five hits and five walks while fanning six. Snider left the game leading the league in innings pitched with 64.2 on the season. Chris Webber came in to relieve the righty and was awarded the loss moving to 1-2 on the season after allowing three earned runs on four hits and a free pass while setting down one on strikes.
