The No. 9 Peacock wrestling team competed at the Luther Open in Decorah, Iowa on Saturday. Twenty-one UIU wrestlers were on the mats at Luther including ten in the Elite (upperclassmen) brackets, while eleven fought through the Silver brackets.
 
In the elite brackets, the Peacocks combined for a 15-15 record with six bonus-point wins including two falls, a tech fall and three majors.
 
Chance Throndson posted a pair of wins and placed second at 157 pounds. Throndson's day was highlighted by a 12-10 decision over David Hollingsworth of Wartburg College. Hollingsworth is ranked No. 1 in the country after claiming the 2020 NCAA Division III title at 157 pounds.
 
Dalton Schams claimed the top wins mark in the Elite brackets with three victories. His biggest win came in a 7-3 win over Wartburg's Brady Fritz. Fritz is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation at NCAA Division III. Schams placed sixth on the day.
 
Donny Schmit (133), Ryan Steffen (157), and Myron Crawford (184) all won two matches, while Chase Luensman (157) scored a 1-0 record before withdrawing from competition.
 
In the Silver brackets, Upper Iowa combined for a 29-17 record between their eleven wrestlers, eight of which wrestled unattached. The group put together 14 bonus-point victories including 12 falls, one tech fall and one major.
 
Averee Abben (125, unattached) put together a monster 5-0 day with a pair of falls to win the 125-pound title. Abben defeated wrestlers from Luther College, Augsburg University, Wartburg  and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. In addition to his two falls, the freshman won a pair of 6-3 and 9-3 decisions and one match by injury default.
 
Ethen Doty (141, unattached) posted a 4-1 record to place third. All four of Doty's wins came with bonus points thanks to three falls and a tech fall.
 
John Ebaugh placed second in the 149-pound bracket with a 3-1 record and a fall, while Ben Foelske (unattached) recorded five straight wins after an opening bout loss to place fifth. Foelske registered three wins by fall during his run through the consolation brackets. Gunner Rodgers claimed a 4-2 record at 157 pounds gaining bonus points with a fall and a major to place seventh.
 
Cael Meyer (174, unattached) was 2-1 with a fall to place sixth, while Kain Luensman (149, unattached) was 2-3 with a fall, but still placed eighth. Reily Dolan (141, unattached) and Jackson Rolfs (157, unattached) both grabbed a pair of wins on the day.
 
Upper Iowa will head back into the circle next weekend in another open tournament. The Peacocks are traveling to Minneapolis, Minn. to compete in the Auggie Open hosted by Augsburg on Saturday, Nov. 20.
