Upper Iowa Comes Up Short Against UMary

Upper Iowa fell to the University of Mary by an 85-71 count on Friday night. The Peacocks were unable to match the Marauders’ efficient shooting performance as UMary converted over 50% of their attempts from the field and from long distance as well as posting an 85% mark from the free-throw line. With the loss, Upper Iowa moves to 14-9, 11-6 in conference play while UMary improves to 11-12 overall, 6-11 in NSIC play.

Upper Iowa fell to the University of Mary by an 85-71 count on Friday night. The Peacocks were unable to match the Marauders' efficient shooting performance as UMary converted over 50% of their attempts from the field and from long distance as well as posting an 85% mark from the free-throw line. With the loss, Upper Iowa moves to 14-9, 11-6 in conference play while UMary improves to 11-12 overall, 6-11 in NSIC play.

The Peacocks and the Marauders went toe-to-toe to start the first half. UMary maintained the lead for the first 11:52 of play but never led by more than two possessions during the stretch. Upper Iowa went ahead for the first and only time when a three-pointer from Dylan Jones put UIU up 27-26 with 8:08 to play.

UMary followed with a 17-4 run that put the Marauders ahead 45-31 with 1:07 to go in the first frame. The Peacocks were able to score once more before half resulting in a 45-33 UMary advantage at the break.

UMary was on fire in the first half, the Marauders went 16-29 (55.2%) from the field including 6-9 (66.7%) from beyond the arc. Upper Iowa went 15-32 (46.9%) from the field despite shooting just 3-14 (21.4%) from three-point range. UMary also converted 7-9 (77.8%) of their attempts from the charity stripe while Upper Iowa went 0-2 in the first half.

Joshua Carter led the Peacocks with eight points at the break. Carter went 4-6 (66.7%) from the field and grabbed three boards in the first frame.

The Marauders broke off on a 10-0 run to extend their lead to 21. The stretch put UMary ahead 65-44 with 12:55 left on the clock.

Upper Iowa rattled off nine unanswered points to cut their deficit down to 74-60 with 6:16 left to play. The stretch wasn't enough to propel the Peacocks past the Marauders resulting in the 85-71 loss.


STATS OF THE GAME… 

  • UMary held the advantage on the glass 37-29.

  • The Marauders outshot the Peacocks in every statistical category: 29-55 (52.7%) to 30-64 (46.9%) from the field, 10-18 (55.6%) to 8-27 (29.6%) from downtown and 17-20 (85%) to 3-8 (37.5%) from the free throw line.


PEACOCKS OF THE GAME… 

  • Carter scored 17 points shooting 8-13 (61.5%) from the field. He also tallied five rebounds, four assists, and three steals on the night.

  • Jake Hilmer scored 13 points and recorded game-highs in rebounds and assists with six apiece. He also went 6-9 (66.7%) from the field.

  • Joe Smoldt scored 15 points and grabbed four boards.
