The Upper Iowa Peacocks split their midweek NSIC double header against the Concordia St. Paul Golden Bears on Tuesday afternoon. The Peacocks took game one thanks to a stellar pitching performance from
Duncan Snider, throwing six scoreless frames and striking out six Golden Bears in the 11-0 win. Game two went to CSP after the Golden Bears scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to walk-off with the 3-2 win.
The split decision moves UIU's record to 9-21 overall and 6-19 against conference opponents. CSP brings their record 19-18 overall and 10-15 in NSIC contests.
Game One: UIU 11 – CSP 0
The Peacocks came out to a red-hot start to game one, scoring 10 runs between the first two frames. Upper Iowa opened the scoring in the top of the first when A.J. Friedrich singled to right field to drive in
Tony Salato. A few batters later, the Peacocks loaded bases for
Cole Scieszinski who knocked in Friedrich and
Emmett Kulick with a single to left.
The UIU bats stayed hot through the next frame, putting up a crooked number in the top of the second inning.
Riley Braughton got things going for the Peacocks in the second with an RBI single that brought
Cody Ryan home. For the second time in two innings, Friedrich singled to drive Salato home for his team-leading 22
nd RBI of the season and extending UIU's lead to 5-0. Scieszinski drove in his second runner of the day with a single to left and was immediately followed by
Jack Thode who ripped a double down the line to bring in another Peacock run.
Cody Ryan followed that with a 2-run RBI double of his own to extend the Upper Iowa lead to 10-0.
Jake Dale picked up an insurance run in the top of the seventh, hitting a triple to deep right center that allowed
Dalton Steere to come around and score, extending UIU's lead to 11-0.
Duncan Snider was able to keep the Golden Bears at bay, only allowing three hits and two walks in his six innings.
Chris Webber came on in relief for the seventh inning, striking out three of the four batters he faced to close things out for the Peacocks.
Tuesday's game one win brings Sniders record to 2-4 this season while his Golden Bear counterpart, Connor Hurley, was charged the loss.
In his 6 NSIC games, Snider has allowed 9 earned runs, but has a 2-4 record as UIU has only provided 5 runs in support over his last 5 starts.
Game Two: UIU 2 – CSP 3
Game two was the Golden Bears' turn to score first, after a sacrifice fly to center allowed a run to score in the third.
The Peacocks did not take long to respond, getting the run back in the top of the fourth when Friedrich hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Zackary Cain to score from third.
Blake Thiesse was able to keep the score level at 1-1, allowing only 1 run and 2 hits while striking out 4 CSP batters over the course of his 7 innings.
Upper Iowa broke the deadlock in the top of the ninth with an RBI triple by Friedrich, his fourth RBI and sixth hit of the day put the Peacocks on top 2-1.
In the bottom of the ninth, CSP answered the Peacocks with an RBI triple of their own off the bat of right fielder Cole Kirchoff to even the score at 2-2. Two batters later Golden Bear catcher, Tom Austin, hit a sacrifice fly to right field that was deep enough to bring home the winning run for CSP.
Clayton Lieb was charged with the loss for the Peacocks, bringing his record to 1-2 on the season. CSP's Blake Stelzer worked two innings and allowed one run but picked up the win to improve his record to 3-0.
The Peacocks will return to action on Friday with a double header against the University of Sioux Falls Cougars at Robertson Woods Field. First pitch for game one of the double header is scheduled for 1:30 pm and fans can follow along with an audio broadcast and live stats at
