UIU Wrestling Sets Out For Two NSIC Duals in North Dakota

No. 6 Upper Iowa will get on the mat for their first dual action of the season this weekend with a pair of Northern Sun Conference duals on the road. The Peacocks have to take their longest trip in the conference for match-ups this Friday at Minot State University at 7 p.m. and Saturday at the University of Mary at 2 p.m.

This Week in Peacock Wrestling... No. 6 Upper Iowa will get on the mat for their first dual action of the season this weekend with a pair of Northern Sun Conference duals on the road. The Peacocks have to take their longest trip in the conference for match-ups this Friday at Minot State University at 7 p.m. and Saturday at the University of Mary at 2 p.m.
 
Live Options… Fans unable to attend can follow the live results or watch a webcast through the links above or at UIUPeacocks.com/Live. The dual will also stream live on the NSIC Channel on all Roku and Amazon Fire devices, as well as Apple and Android televisions.
 
UIU in November… The Peacocks have opened their 2019-20 season with four tournaments including the Yellowjacket Open, the Millikin Open, the Luther Open and the Auggie-Adidas Invite. UIU wrestlers have posted 294 victories in the four events and combined have recorded a winning percentage of .741 in their 397 bouts. The Peacock wrestlers have also recorded 142 bonus-point wins including 85 falls, 16 tech falls and 41 major decisions. Tate Murty leads the team in falls with 8, while Mac Spotts has a team-high 4 tech falls and Nick Baumler has registered 6 majors.

Peacocks in the Rankings… Upper Iowa is ranked No. 6 in the country in the latest NWCA Division II Top 25 released by the Division II rankings committee. Individually, the Peacocks boast four individuals in the rankings including a pair of NCAA Division II All-Americans in Nick Baumler (197) and Justin Folley (133). Baumler is ranked No. 1 in the nation, while Folley is ranked No. 4 in his weight class. In addition to last year's Peacock All-Americans, Brock Benitz is ranked No. 4 at 165 pounds, while Dalton Hahn is ranked No. 11 in the 184-pound weight class.
 
Scouting the Beavers… Minot State has toed the line for three open meets this season including tournaments hosted by the University of Jamestown, North Dakota State University and Concordia College. MiSU won their only dual at home versus U-Mary 19-16. Joseph Lopez recorded a victory by fall in the Beavers' dual with UMary. Other wins came from Dean Arevalo (125), Oscar Nellis (133), Shadi Mitwalli (149), and Keegan Berry (184). The Beavers' only returning national qualifier, Jordan Will, may see his first action on the mat this season on Friday. Will and Arevalo recently received national rankings of No. 10 and No. 11 in their respective weight classes. Will and Arevalo are both ranked No. 1 in their weight classes in the NWCA Division II Region 5 rankings, while Mitwalli is ranked No. 5 and Berry is ranked No. 6 in the region.
 
Scouting the Marauders… U-Mary defeated Concordia College 28-6 in their home opener, but dropped a 19-16 decision to Minot State to open their NSIC season. The Marauders had five wrestlers ranked regionally in the most recent poll. They are: Jeremy Leintz | 125 | 4th, Trevor Fauver | 141 | 6th, Braydon Huber | 157 | 3rd, Dante Springsteen | 165 | 4th and Dom Tudor | 285 | 5th. Gerardo Jaime and Dominic Tudor shared the Jamestown Open title in the 285 class with both wrestlers going 3-0 on the day before a double forfeit by both in the championship match made them co-champions. Wrestling unattached, Chandler Mooney earned the title at the Jamestown Open in the 149 class. Mooney went 4-0 on the day to claim his title. Jeremy Leintz earned the 125-weight class title at the Cobber Open. Leintz went 4-0 on the day to claim the title. Braydon Huber was crowned champion of the 157 class at the Cobber Open. Huber went 4-0 on the day to claim the win. Dante Springsteen earned the 165 title in the 165-weight class at the Cobber Open. Springsteen went 4-0 on the day to win the title.
 
Looking Ahead… The Peacocks will host Southwest Minnesota State University next Thursday night in Dorman Memorial Gymnasium at 7 p.m. The dual is UIU's only home action prior to the New Year.  Upper Iowa will head to the Desert Duals in Las Vegas, Nev. on Sunday, Dec. 22 to close out the 2019 portion of their schedule.
