In a battle of nationally-ranked opponents, the No. 22 Peacocks fell 3-0 to the No. 8 Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs on the road. SMSU edged Upper Iowa in the opening sets with a pair of 25-23 set victories and then controlled much of the third set to put the match away with a 25-19 win. The Mustangs improved to 11-2 (5-0 NSIC) with the sweep while Upper Iowa dropped to 10-3 (2-3 NSIC).
The first set was neck and neck until Upper Iowa found some separation with a 7-0 run to take a 14-9 lead against the home team. The Mustangs battled their way back into the set, though, to tie things up at 19-all and prompt a timeout from the Peacock bench. The teams fought point-for-point out to a 22-22 draw before SMSU scored three of the last four points thanks to three kills.
The second set was a lot like the first set with the Peacocks leading for a majority of the match. SMSU took a late 19-17 lead with back-to-back service aces from Alisa Bengen but the teams once again battled to a late-frame draw at 23-23. Similar to the first set, the Peacocks came up short by two points as the Mustangs capitalized on a kill and a UIU error to end the frame.
Upper Iowa got out to a quick 4-0 lead in the third but SMSU went to the line and generated a 6-0 run of their own to take the lead for good. The Peacocks were able to get something going late in the match with three uncontested kills, but a service error would end the rally short.
TURNING POINT... The Peacocks held the lead for the majority of the first two sets but weren't able to finish what they started when it got down to the wire. In the third frame, Upper Iowa started on a similar path of jumping out to a lead but SMSU put on their rally caps earlier and were able to control the set for the first time.
