For the second straight season, the Upper Iowa women's basketball team made the short trip to Cedar Falls, Iowa to face the NCAA Division I Panthers of the University of Northern Iowa in an exhibition game. The Peacocks started and ended the game strong, but the Panthers outscored their visitors 44-17 in the middle frames to secure a 67-40 victory on Sunday afternoon at the McLeod Center.
The game marked the first time the Peacocks played in front of a crowd under the direction of new Head Coach Nate Oakland, who served as an assistant coach at UNI between 2006-09.
Upper Iowa shot 28.6 percent from the field with 8 of 16 made shots coming from behind the arc. The Peacocks were just 8-for-29 inside the arc and could not take advantage of their limited trips to the free throw line (0-7). Northern Iowa shot 35.7 percent from the field during the contest with a big second quarter where the Panthers scored 25 points thanks to 63.6 percent shooting.
The home team out-rebounded the Peacocks 47-27 during the contest including a 17-8 advantage in offensive boards, which led to 23 second chance points. The Panthers were also able to draw 26 personal fouls on the afternoon, which led to 30 free throw attempts. UNI converted 23 of them for a 76.7 percent shooting clip at the line.
The Peacocks were led by freshman Jessica Musgrave's double-double of 11 points (5-12) and 10 rebounds. Redshirt freshman transfer Megan Peterson converted three of six attempts from beyond the arc for nine points, and senior Bekka Pierson added eight points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field. Savannah Domeyer grabbed four rebounds, including three offensive boards, and led the team with a pair of steals.
Upper Iowa will open the season at the Central Region Challenge in Monticello, Ark. on Nov. 8-9 before returning to Fayette for the Peacocks' home opener on Nov. 13 against McKendree University.
