Efficient Hitting Leads No. 21 Peacocks to 11th Sweep of the Season

The No. 21 Peacock volleyball team claimed their 11th sweep of the 2019 campaign on Saturday afternoon against the University of Mary. Upper Iowa outscored the visitors 25-10, 25-8, and 25-18 in three sets to improve to 15-6 overall and 7-6 in the conference, which moves the Peacocks into the three-way tie for 8th place in NSIC standings. With the loss, UMary falls to 1-21 (0-13 NSIC).

The No. 21 Peacock volleyball team claimed their 11th sweep of the 2019 campaign on Saturday afternoon against the University of Mary. Upper Iowa outscored the visitors 25-10, 25-8, and 25-18 in three sets to improve to 15-6 overall and 7-6 in the conference, which moves the Peacocks into the three-way tie for 8th place in NSIC standings. With the loss, UMary falls to 1-21 (0-13 NSIC). 

The Upper Iowa offense was firing on all cylinders throughout the match, posting a season-high .384 hitting efficiency including a .425 mark in the final set. UIU knocked down 44 kills and only committed six errors in 99 swings. Defensively, the home team was able to slow the UMary offense and hold them to 23 kills, 21 errors and a .020 hitting percentage. 


TURNING POINT... After scoring the final four points of the first set to win 25-10, the Peacocks jumped out to a 8-0 lead in the second frame and later generated a 7-0 spurt to claim a 18-3 lead. Upper Iowa scored seven of the last 10 points to capture a 25-8 lead, and then closed the door in the third with a 25-18 set win. 
PEACOCKS OF THE GAME...
  • Anna Winter powered down 18 kills without an error in 34 attempts (.529) to lead the UIU offense. She matched her highest kills per set average of the season (6.0/set) and hit over .500 for the second time this year
  • Kaitlin Niedert finished with 10 kills (.389) and went 8-11 in the final two sets 
  • Haley Weepie collected 19 digs (6.3/set)
  • Carlee Ketchum dished out 37 assists (12.3/set)

STATS OF THE GAME...
  • Upper Iowa hit a season-high .384 thanks to 44 kills (14.7/set) and just six errors in 99 attempts
  • The Peacocks tallied seven service aces, the most against a conference opponent this season
  • The UIU defense held their opponent to under a .100 hitting efficiency for the seventh time this season; UMary swung at a .020 clip with 23 kills and 21 errors in 100 attempts
  • The Peacocks extended their win streak against the Marauders to 15 straight games and now lead the all-time series 16-3

UP NEXT... Upper Iowa is set to host No. 17 Winona State University for a Halloween night matchup beginning at 6 p.m. in Fayette. Thursday's match marks the first of a busy stretch on the Peacock schedule. UIU will also face No. 7 Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday (11/2) and (RV) Minnesota State University, Mankato on Monday (11/4) during the tough five-day stretch.
