Upper Iowa scored a big win on Friday afternoon in Fayette with a 2-0 decision over Minot State University to notch their third win over an NSIC opponent. The Peacocks controlled the match against the Beavers and posted a pair of goals in the final twenty minutes to claim the victory and three points in the conference standings. With the win, UIU improved to 3-7-4 overall and 3-5-3 in the Northern Sun, while MiSU dropped to 3-10 overall and 3-7 in conference action.
The Peacocks were able to snap their guest's two-match win streak thanks to solid defense in the first half and a relenting attack all game long. Upper Iowa put the first goal in the back of the net in the 70
th minute when
Molly Doran brought the ball from the midfield to the right side of the field. Doran hit
Facienne Graham, who delivered a centering pass to
Leah Willenbring. Willenbring gathered the ball then hit a bounding shot past the Beaver keeper to put UIU ahead 1-0. A little less than nine minutes later,
Aimee Sies delivered on a corner kick that beat the keeper to the top left corner of the frame and gave the home team an insurance goal.
Upper Iowa controlled the midfield thanks to solid ball handling from
Jayna Morikawa,
Katie Samuels and
Victoria Sanchez. The trio continued to find the Peacock forwards down the field and play passes back to the defenders when the situation called for it.
Aimee Kemper and
Facienne Graham pushed the pace and forced the ball deep into the Minot State end in both halves.
While the offense was maintaining control of the ball, the defense stayed alert and involved locking the ball into the offensive half.
Joline Hellstroem,
Aimee Sies and
Molly Doran all spent a lot of time near midfield in the second half.
Minot State took a few runs at the Peacock defense in the first half led by one of the NSIC's best forwards, Sofia Lewis. Lewis got four shots off in the game and put two on frame, but Doran, Sies and Hellstroem were up to the task in making every attempt a tough one.
Natalie Rudrud collected all four saves she had a chance at to post her third save of the season.
Turning Point… Despite controlling much of the action through the first three-quarters of the match, the Peacocks were still deadlocked in a scoreless tie. Willenbring scored her first collegiate goal from just outside the box finishing assists from Graham and Doran to notch the eventual game winner.
