Bemidji holds off strong Peacock offense led by Williams and Smoldt

Bemidji State 93 - Upper Iowa 90. Despite combining for 55 points and collectively knocking down 12 three-pointers, Jaresse Williams and Joe Smoldt could not guide the Peacocks past the Bemidji State Beavers as Upper Iowa dropped Friday night’s matchup to BSU 93-90. The loss drops the Peacocks to 6-11 on the season and 3-8 against NSIC opponents.

Despite combining for 55 points and collectively knocking down 12 three-pointers, Jareese Williams and Joe Smoldt could not guide the Peacocks past the Bemidji State Beavers as Upper Iowa dropped Friday night's matchup to BSU 93-90. The loss drops the Peacocks to 6-11 on the season and 3-8 against NSIC opponents. Upper Iowa will look to rebound Saturday night when they take on Minnesota Crookston at 5:30pm.

With ten minutes to go in the second quarter, the Peacocks were ahead by 12 when BSU fought their way back into the game. The Beavers knocked down eight shots from beyond the arc, including four from BSU's Jacob Hoffman, to get back in front 86-84 with four minutes to play. In the final 30 seconds, Smoldt knocked down a pair of shots from the charity stripe and Chris Olson got a bucket to go in the paint to cut Bemidji's lead to one but there was not enough time left on the clock for the Peacocks to get ahead of the Beavers.

Williams finished the night with 28 points for his fourth 20-point game of the season and was one rebound shy of a double-double. Smoldt recorded a career-high 27 points and added five assists on the night. Kyle Haber joined them in the double-digit category, scoring 11 points of his own.

The Peacocks combined for 15 three-pointers against the Beavers, the eighth time UIU has knocked down 15 or more from deep and proving why they are one of the most dangerous three-point offenses in the NSIC. Upper Iowa hit 15 of their 23 attempts from downtown for a 65.2 three-point percentage. Williams led the long-range attack for UIU, going a perfect six for six from deep. Smoldt added six of his own on eight attempts, Jackson Foley was perfect on both of his attempts going two for two against BSU, and Haber knocked down a deep shot as well.

Upper Iowa will look to right the ship and put an end to their current five-game skid Saturday night against UM Crookston. The Peacocks will take on the Golden Eagles on Saturday at 5:30pm in Crookston, Minnesota and can be viewed at UIUpeacocks.com/live.
