Upper Iowa met Concordia University, St. Paul at Sea Foam Stadium in St. Paul, Minn. for a week two Northern Sun Conference South Division match up. The Golden Bears stifled the Peacock rushing attack and limited UIU to just three third-down conversions on the way to a 34-7 victory. The Peacocks fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Golden Bears even their record at 1-1.
The home team posted the only score of the first quarter when Lajuan Preston broke free for a 73-yard rush midway through the frame. Early in the second quarter, Jonas Schenderlein put home a 43-yard field goal to put Concordia-St. Paul ahead 10-0.
After a
Daniel Ruffin Jr. interception, his second in as many weeks, the Peacocks were backed up against their own goalline. After gaining a first down, the drive stalled inside the 20-yard line. UIU's punt on fourth down was blocked by Grant Ericksen and scooped up by Emanuel Jones for a Golden Bear touchdown. CSP made it 24-0 with just under three minutes to play in the half when Dom McKinzy connected with MJ Williams for a 61-yard score.
On Upper Iowa's ensuing possession, the Peacocks used an 8-play, 75-yard drive to scratch the scoreboard for the first time on Saturday. The long drive was capped off by a
Brent Lammers to
DJ Emsweller 11-yard, pass-and-catch.
The Peacocks pushed the ball down the field on their second possession of the third quarter and found themselves at the Golden Bear 26-yard line, but a pair of incomplete passes on third and fourth down turned the ball over with UIU still trailing 24-7.
Late in the third quarter, Schenderlein hit his second field goal, this one from 49 yards to put CSP ahead by 20 points. Â On UIU's next possession, Lammers and running back
Jon Deprey mishandled a handoff and the Golden Bears jumped on the ball at the UIU 32-yard line. Concordia-St. Paul pushed their advantage to 34-7 just three plays later when McKinzy four Shaq Johnson from 17 yards out for a touchdown.
UIU's final three possessions all ended inside the CSP 35-yard line, but a pair of turnovers on downs and a interception in the endzone ended the Peacock threat each time.
The Golden Bears rushed for 271 yards led by 110 from Johnson, 76 from Preston and 56 from McKinzy. CSP also held their guests to just 3 third-down conversions in 17 attempts.
