Late Game Push by Peacocks Not Enough to Take Down No. 17 RiverHawks

The Upper. Iowa men's soccer team falls to No. 17 Northeastern State 4-2 despite late game push

The Upper Iowa Peacocks fell 4-2 to No. 17 Northeastern State on Sunday bringing their record to 3-3-2 on the year and 2-1 against MIAA opponents. The RiverHawks controlled the majority of the game but the Peacocks were able to fight their way back into the game with two late goals.

The Peacocks found themselves deep in a hole after Northeastern State put themselves up 4-0 thanks to a pair of goals from their center back, James Doyle. The RiverHawks played a very physical game, committing 23 fouls and Upper Iowa struggled to match their level of play. Northeastern State also held the edge in shots, taking 22 throughout the game to the Peacocks' 16 attempts.

Upper Iowa received a spark to their offensive efforts after Joaquin Alonso slid a pass between two RiverHawks defenders to Robin Stoffels who tucked the ball past the keeper in the 79th minute. The Peacocks continued to apply the pressure finding a second goal in the 89th minute. Italo Martins Soares sent in a freekick that the RiverHawk goal keeper couldn't hang on to, Juan Camilo Figueroa was there to collect the rebound and tapped it just over the line for the Peacocks' second goal and his first of the season. The effort was too little too late as Northeastern State was able to run out the remaining time and hold off the late push by Upper Iowa.

The Peacocks will return to action on Thursday when they will take on the Fort Hays State Tigers in Hays, Kansas. The Tigers are currently ranked No. 14 in the nation and sit atop the MIAA standings with a 2-0 conference record.
